Was Soviet Air Space, both Russian and Ukrainian, and Chinese air space closed to foreign airliners in the cold war?

Someone told me a plane was not allowed go straight from Western Europe to Japan through Soviet, Mongolian and Chinese air space in Cold War era.

Remember one Korean airlines or two werealso shot down in Siberia during the 80s...

just wondering why even other airlines directed their planes not to fly on that region and still mh17 flew there, the my govt even reiterated that based from intl aviation org the path was deemed to be ok...after 2 planes were shot down by missiles in the past week...what were they thinking!!!
