How would you rate it for those living in Japan as an expat, and assuming his/her Japanese proficiency at an intermediate level? And if I live there as a skilled professional, which rules out jobs like English teachers. I heard the job security there is significantly better than in the US though.

I'd really like to help you with some personal expat experience there but since I lack it, here is information that you might find useful:

average US salary: $44,753
Japan: $23,486

List of countries by average wage - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Human development index Japan: 17, US: 5.
Interesting note: In 2030 it is projected that the Japan HDI will be 2nd in the world only behind Australia.

I've been interested in Japan for a while, hence I had some facts handy...

Trust me, the average yearly salary in Japan is A LOT higher than $23,486.
In the most rural area's of Japan maybe the people only make 20k per year but in the urban area's, where most Japanese live its closer to 50k, especially in Tokyo (City in the world with the most millionaires).

Japan healthcare is considerably cheaper than the USA, but they are having trouble funding and caring for their elderly due to the lack of future workers and taxpayers (babies) being born.

And they have a rather weak welfare system to look after the struggling people and jobseekers, like the USA.

I lived in Tokyo for a year. Salaries are surprisingly low.
Most live in small apartments in extremely urbanized areas.
It is extremely "japanese." Which may sound obvious but it's hard to get a handle on it until you live there. It's not like many western countries where there are all types of people around.
If you aren't japanese, you will never really be a part of the country.
I enjoy Japan quite a bit but I think most non-japanese will have better lifestyle, income, etc in western cities.

No, I think I would trust the Japanese govt. on Japanese wages instead of some dude on the internet.

Actually I have, and it doesn't matter, you still have no point.

Visiting a place has nothing to do with knowing the official govt. stats on median household income. It's a completely nonsensical point. Why would visiting a place make me know the entire universe of salaries in a country?

And Tokyo is less than 10% of the country. Even if I personally knew the salary of every single Tokyo resident, it would be useless info in answering the question.
