Bhutan is clean and pretty but sterile.

Thailand has some of the worlds hottest tourist spots, but because of all the tourists, they are being spoiled as far as their exotic appeal. I think there are other places that are more exotic and less tourist infested like Myanmar that are worth traveling to. Having said that, Thailand is still a great place to visit.

According to general western view, the answer is Southeast Asia countries.

Mostly, the answer is completely different if you ask Asian the same question.

Exotic? As in least influenced by Western culture? I would say Bhutan, Myanmar or Laos. You'd have to have tons of time and spare cash and get real lost to find a place not crawling with mundane not-so-exotic tourists. There are probably some cool islands in Indonesia that might push the meter towards "exotic".

As a Korean Thailand is still exotic. Tropical weather and sea resorts are quite exotic to koreans.

Myanmar and Laos are both mainly Buddhist countries next to Thailand and have less interaction with tourists.

Not exotic to people in Singapore, HK, Macau and Taiwan, where tropical fruits and thai cuisine are common. The rice in Chinese cuisines in these places use rice grown in Thailand. Thai rice is more similar to Southern Chinese rice and not similar to Korean and Japanese rice. Considerable influence in cultures by the Southern Chinese migrated to Thailand. Thai language is actually closely similar to Zhuang, the language of the largest ethnic minority group of China. Half of the ancestors of Thailand may have originated from Yunnan, Guangxi and Chaozhou region of Guangdong.

To us, Sabah was exotic. I am not a big fan of Thailand, too hot and crowded.

Yes, replace 'Thailand' with 'Italy' and it means the same thing. Tolerate the crowds in certain spots and at certain times of the year and you still have two of the most interesting and fulfilling parts of the world.

Exotic? Too many posters on this thread have different definitions of exotic.

Thailand is really not what I'd consider exotic anymore. You can find a 7/11 on every corner there. It's still an interesting place to visit though.

Now I'd consider Mongolia, Tibet, Bhutan, Nepal, Vietnam, and Burma more exotic than Thailand.

Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan are pretty interesting but the Russian influence blunts the exoticness in my opinion.

Prior to this examination of glamour, there is Vietnam, South Korea, Indonesia, Malaysia, India, Sri Lanka, Laos, Cambodia, Nepal, Bhutan. Rational confusion for how the over popularity got that far. And not even entering the real Middle East that isn’t even technically always belonging to this entire mass of culture.
