How widely spoken/useful are the Indonesian/Malaysian languages outside of Indonesia and Malaysia? Seeing how Indonesia is the fourth most populous country in the world, it would seem like there should be a large and broad Indonesian diaspora.

Not really worth learning if you don't plan to stay in Indonesia/Malaysia.

Well lots of Singaporeans incorporate elements of Malay into English, creating that unique Singlish dialect (pretty much detested by everyone including the government of Singapore).
That's the only impact I can think of.

It is not difficult to learn at base level, but becomes more complicated from there. I find Bahasa, a rather attractive language, well worth learning at least to a certain level, and proved very useful in Malaysia as well as travelling remote in Indonesia.

Yes very similar, I believe, to the closeness of Hindi and Urdu. Most words in Indonesian and Malay are the same. There is a little Dutch influence in Indonesian, more English in Malay, the odd Portuguese word in Malay and so on. Both languages are very understandable to each other although accents differ greatly.

It's like American English vs British English.

That is why I want English standardization. There should be one way to spell a word. American English and British English spell some words differently.

I just use whichever I find more convenient, which in most cases ends up being American as I don’t see the point in having additional letters.

Color vs colour
Traveling vs travelling
