With all of the political and protest issues going on in Hong Kong, and now there is violence and social/economic life is now badly disrupted, does anyone think it will get so bad to the point that Hong Kong citizens will apply for refugee asylum to migrate to other countries?
The USA is one of the countries that is known to be kind to take in refugee immigrants, but who knows if this will be restricted with Trump in office.
Canada has been known to receive the biggest influx of Hong Kong immigrants, but they are usually the rich and business people and Canada is usually not very fond of taking in lower income or refugee immigrants, so the lower income Hong Kong refugees may flood the USA instead.
I´ll tell you one thing, Taiwan will be walking on eggshells with this one. Taiwanese love Hongkongers and vice versa, and the island has recently become a favorite landing spot for Hongkonger emigres. That´s all good and well, but as politically charged as this time is, and with the huge Mainland Chinese elephant in the room...Beijing will be watching the Taiwanese immigration intakes much closer this year.

They should just get to Australia or Canada.

yeah, but they won't be called refugees because it's a wealthy country. They'll just be called immigrants of expats
Vancouver would be the most likely landing spot if they go anywhere. It's expensive but still much lower per sqft than HK. Sydney and Melbourne are also good options, but not as welcoming to immigration than Canada.

Not sure that's fair, we can't accept all the refugees in the world, but we take in our fair share and have done so consistently for many decades.
Well, they'll first move their money offshore. Seems like Singapore has been seeing a bit of movement in that regard.
It will be kind of a wait-and-see sort of thing. A lot of Hongkongers may have already gotten foreign passports in the pre-1997 concerns...so it will be relatively easy for them to pull up stakes if they need to...
If it's United States, Hong Kongers will most likely move to southern California, where there's already an established Chinatown and Alhambra/Monterey Park area.
