In the business realm, Singapore wants to surpass Hong Kong:
Quote:
As unrest in Hong Kong escalated over the summer, the Asian business world looked to Singapore: would the territory’s arch-rival stand to benefit?

Singapore’s American Chamber of Commerce said on Thursday that 22 per cent of companies with operations in Hong Kong were considering moving capital out of the territory and 5 per cent had plans to do so, according to a survey it conducted last month.

Only 1 per cent planned to move business functions, but 23 per cent were considering that option. When asked what the destination of choice would be, more than 90 per cent picked Singapore.

International recruiters say an increasing number of candidates are expressing a preference for Singapore over Hong Kong.

I see Vietnam and Taiwan as being big winners in the trade war, but yes, Singapore will benefit from unrest in HKG. Singapore is more dependant on China than anyone cares to admit..RIDE THE DRAGON..is their economic slogan. There is already a premium paid to invest in Singapore, there are also issues with very high COL, heat, humidity, AND traffic, BUT WHERE ELSE ARE THEY GOING TO go?

Kuala Lumpur is already is a pretty fast growing metropolitan area when it comes to the city's economic profile, it's one of the fastest rising in all of Asia. That's without taking the Hong Kong unrest into account. If the tension in Hong Kong really leads to hemorrhaging in business activity in Hong Kong then I think there's a good chance that Kuala Lumpur would stand to benefit from that.

Malaysia in general is one of the places anywhere in the world that the Chinese invest in.

The Junta in BKK, or Islam in KL....I would go with the Junta....the military has always been the true backbone of the government in Thailand...the police are simply the mafia.

It may not need to surpass, as HK will decline. Without its status as a UK/western hub right next to China, HK is kinda of pointless. Canton was, and is the major port for South China.

Singapore is probably more favorable for western finance anyways as it is not controlled by China.

So really what is the point of HK?

The wealthy in Bangkok would go to HKG fifty times, before going to the mainland..but it does make one wonder about its future. The Brits got out of their almost as quickly as they left Dunkirk. One thing, though, is that many investors in HKG are actually mainlanders..so there is deep mutual I tetest in maintaining the status quo. The antiprotestors are starting to show some force.

I do not know about Bangkok specifically, but these days rich people go to the mainland if they go to China at all. And the Chinese government will always pick stability over saving some investors.

The protesters are losing, their numbers are getting lower and they are losing public support.

I would go to ROC before HKG, and avoid mainland all together, but PEK has done me right over the years, antique jets and all. Can get a can of cold beer at the sundry shop for one USD, and they got a free shower, which is more than you can say for the majority of United clubs.

Hong Kong had been ahead of Singapore before 1997, since then Singapore has been ahead of Hong Kong.

Singapore's leader always serves just one boss -- his own people.

The Chief Executive in Hong Kong serves two bosses -- Beijing and its own people. Unfortunately they are always at odds.

Naturally Singapore wins.
