Macau was a colony of Portugal...but very few people speak Portuguese.

No, not at all.

Portugese is still an official language and many signs, etc. are in Portugese, but the times I've been there, I've never actually heard anyone speak it.

I believe the most common spoken language is Cantonese.

Most of the people educated in Macau speak Cantonese.
Portuguese is still official but in reality it is spoken daily by a small number of people.
Large number of tourists and immigrants come from mainland China, Mandarin is also commonly heard. English is used to communicate between the foreigners and Chinese.
