If he was a true Hindu and knew Hindu dharma ( especially Ram's story) , he would have supported an armed struggle against the British. And not begged for freedom for decades. All he did was to appease British and wanted to be politically correct.
Even today, people from India are seen protesting in front of white house for immigration matters and green cards. ( and which is why no one takes them seriously) They should see what teh Muslims and Jews do to promote and safeguard their rights.

indians were not united in 1857. Some wanted the moguls to come back. You think sikhs are marathis wanted to moguls to come back? None of the leaders had a united front.

The problem is time gap. If you pick and choose some incident from late 1800s and hold it against 2019 values, then one can cry racism even though that might be a very liberal thought in those days.

Even in the 1800s you had plenty of people speaking out against racism and in favor of racial equality.

Distorting history is not new to India. I have only learnt Mughals and British were saviours of the country who encouraged art, education and supported the people.

I was surprised to see the name of Jose Rizal while opening a thread about Gandhi...I often give Rizal, Gandhi and also the congoan Patrice Lumumba as an example of piece activists against western imperialism - few countries have this type of revolutionaries, most revolutionaries are thugs even if they're as intelligent as Che Guevara or still somewhat 'hard to understand' (for the lack of better words) like Yukio Mishina.
