I can't help but wondering, I was watching an old YouTube video of the 2004 tsunami in Phuket and right in the aftermath, in all the chaos, a backpacker could be seen walking as if nothing happened. Seemed like he was just on his way, can't be really sure because vid was made with an old early 00's camcorder, unbothered by all the mayhem around him. Never been a backpacker myself, it made me wonder, what is in the backpack of a typical backpadker in Thailand?

I'm more of a light-packer than backpacker, but here's what I carry in a canvas carry-on shoulder bag, for 6 weeks or so.

-- Tablet and charger
-- toiletry bag, t-brush/paste, all-purpose bar-soap/razor, essential drugs
-- Few plastic bags, clothes-line, few clothes pins, laundry powder; oddsnends
-- nylon pajama bottons, while jeans dry.
-- Couple changes sox, underwear
-- Several everyday button shirts, one tee.
-- NO footwear, just whats on my feet (work boots)

That's about it, about 5-7 kg.

I usually shoot for a week's worth of clothes when I travel and do laundry once a week. If the trip will last 10 days I stretch to accommodate.

When I backpacked around the world in 1978, I carried/wore 2 shorts, 2 long pants, 8 shirts, socks, underwear, one pair of Nike shoes, flip-flops, shower thongs, and a waterproof windbreaker. Assorted other stuff as well. My backpack was mis-shipped leaving Iran and I ended up wearing the same clothes in India for most of a week. I washed the shirt every night and hung it up to dry. Usually still damp when I put it back on.
I would have bought some clothes there but everything was too small for my 6-foot body. Eventually my backpack reappeared and I traveled onward via Pan American Airlines. What a great trip!

- A week+ worth of clothes.
- Heavy duty plastic bag for doing laundry in a sink. Baggie of detergent.
- Clothesline/light rope.
- Wet weather gear (maybe a rain coat, maybe just a plastic sheath)
- Knicknacks and curios picked up on the trip that I haven't mailed yet.
- 2 Towels beach style (thin), hand towel, wash cloth.
- Bar soap, a roll of toilet paper (or 6 while in India), hand sanitizer.
- First aid kit: iodine, bandages, tweezers, painkillers, maybe some immodium (while in India), and a ****load of Taiwanese Doxycyclene while in malarial areas. One pill a day.
- Tiny laptop (When I was a backpacker it was pre-cellphone time) and charger/power.
- Plastic Sunglasses, hat, sandals or flip-flops (for showers).
- Water bottle.
- Camera if it wasn't in my vest pocket.

Passports and money were always strapped to me, under my armpit, even when sleeping. They reeked after a year.
