My native language is Turkish. I dont know any arabic and I dont understand any arabic. It is a totally different language but we took a lot of words from arabic just like British people took a lot of words from french language.
However, when one speaks arabic, I dont understand anything. Nothing. We dont speak arabic, we speak turkish. We also use latin alphabet.

As you say, English is related to French, I'd have to add German too, but it doesn't help with understanding a language in its entirety.
If the English works to get you through, then just go with it.
Just because you are genetically close to this or that, doesn't mean you should be expected to understand the lingo.

Turkish is a different language. Arabic is a different langauge. Different nations have different languages. Simple.
Turkey is not an arabic country. Its language is Turkish.
I dont understand anything at all when one speaks arabic. Nothing.

You don't have to, why should you?
I have relatives that I don't understand, that supposedly speak the same language as me, and I don't need to, because I don't speak to them.
The reason, is that culturally, they are a'holes, and whatever they say, is unintelligible.
People are different, let it be.

Spanish people are Christian. So are british people.
Then they are the same nation.
This is your logic.
Turkish language is as different from Arabic as Spanish language is from English.
You get this part?
By knowing english, how much spanish do you understand? Consider the same.
