Spicy food isn’t the issue. I think it might have something to do with the number of Indonesian immigrants or the less distinctive nature of their food. Chinese, Indian and Thai food is well known globally.

Indonesian food is very popular in The Netherlands, the former colonial 'master. So much so in fact it has long become part of national cuisine. Probably more to do with fewer Indonesian migrants and students than the taste. Malay/Indonesian food is rather nice in fact so hardly the taste. Just a general unawareness of the country in general. Many do not associate Bali with Indonesia for what ever reasons.

Probably due to the fact that it is primarily Hindu rather than Muslim like most of Indonesia. Completely different vibe and much more pleasant for a tourist.

I think it has to do with the lack knowledge about it and of go to dishes. I know a few but the average person could not name even one Indonesian dish.
