I've been living in Japan part-time since 2009 and there's often a difference when dealing with somebody from the older generation versus new generation though not always. I've developed real friendships with older people in Hokkaido though it took time to gain their trust. With regards to speaking Japanese it's a bear to learn the written language but learning to speak it (only) is not that hard. With the optical reader function on Google Translate though I have little to no trouble figuring out labels, signs, letters etc. any longer.
