Granted I will admit that I dont have an indepth knowledge of the country, but my impression was that it was a quietly relatively high achieving country that had just emerged from decades of civil war and was on the way up. It had a higher HDI than India/Pakistan and seemed to be doing just fine in the shadow of its much larger neighbors.
Fast forward today, the Prime Minister just announced that the economy has officially collapsed. Massive shortages of essential goods all over. Yet this is not a communist fiasco like say Venezuela. Since the civil war ended it has been peaceful. What happened?

The Rajapaksa family and their friends have been ruling the country since the 1970s..
Cronyism and nepotism became much worse under the Rajapaksa family (Sri Lanka).
The Somoza family ruled Nicaragua for forty-three years from 1936 to 1979.
I'm baffled at how foolish some can be. Did they think that we've been able to achieve the agricultural yields that we do because we wished it and it became true? Pesticides and the like have been a major contributor of what we produce today.
Organic produce, which isn't even inherently healthier than non-organic produce--is at much higher risk of being devastated a whole host of pests, etc.
