The number of ``fulminant hemolytic streptococcal infections,'' also known as flesh-eating bacteria, is rapidly increasing. Following last year's record high of 941 cases, the cumulative number of reported cases as of January 28 of this year has already reached 200. The mortality rate is high at approximately 30%.
Travelers need to be extra careful about basic hygiene practices like hand washing while in Japan right now. With stats showing such a big spike in cases of that flesh-eating bacteria, it's smart that officials are warning people.

It's the raw food, folks! Sushi, beef tartare, raw oysters. Stay away from it if you can - I know it's a bit counterproductive since Japan is the land of fresh sushi and most people go there to enjoy local delicacies. But there's just too much potential danger with raw and undercooked food: tape worm, flesh eating bacteria, just to name two.
I don't eat raw food when I travel overseas, not even salad. Cooked food only. And avoid buffet.
