"He has two balls, and they are well hung!")

"Medieval eyewitness accounts give no doubt that at one time, this chair and others like it were indeed an important part of the papal coronation ritual. But why should the cardinals be so concerned that they would go through the embarrassment of publicly probing their new boss to demonstrate that the pope is indeed a male? (It wasn't done quietly, either."

Papal Trivia (http://www.weirdload.com/popes.html - broken link)

This insane ritual was apparently in reaction to the furor caused by Pope Joan.

I've always liked Pope Joan - a sot of Vatican Hatshepsut (q,v)

Legendary..but

"Yet for hundreds of years -- up to the middle of the seventeenth century -- Joan’s papacy was universally known and accepted as truth. In the seventeenth century, the Catholic Church, under increasing attack from rising Protestantism, began a concerted effort to destroy the embarrassing historical records on Joan. Hundreds of manuscripts and books were seized by the Vatican. Joan’s virtual disappearance from modern consciousness attests to the effectiveness of these measures."

Well, similar claims can be made about another religious figure, Jesus Christ, and he's pretty legendary, too. The poster has an agenda, too. There's a book to sell.

Why feel? Couldn't they just look? Or, trust their god to appoint an adequate pope?

Funny how the pope was supposed to have so much power yet had to succumb to this type of thing by 'lesser people'.
