“In most African-American communities, it is more acceptable to be a criminal who goes to church on Sunday, while selling drugs to kids all week, than to be an atheist who ... contributes to society and supports his family.”

I know several, though only slightly except for one who I met here who has since moved. One is on an online private board and lives in Haiti. There are several with pictures posted on the Houston Atheist Meetup group though I have not met them except online. I haven't counted to see how many. I also met two or three at the Atheist convention in Houston.
I know about 2. Lately there has been a silent conversation amongst black twenty somethings concerning religion. Everyone is finally started to ask questions and are tiring of the "don't you question god or the bible" frame of mind that they grew up with which is great. I got tired of watching a generation of people stuck in their own iniquity because "Jesus gonna make a way". Even my mother has that type of attitude. It's sad.
I think the concept of religion is a beautiful thing. The faith that everything is going to be alright. Such a beautiful thing. But as someone said upthread the bible was handed to us to "train" us and keep us in check. the repercussions from this are dire. It has resulted in a defeatist attitude that some communities of black folk can't shake.

I'm a gay, black male atheist from the bible belt south. I'm a triple threat. If I was born female, I would be a quadruple threat. So I've got 3 first class tickets to HELL!
