Pretty shocking news story. It certainly doesn't sound like the message christianity purports to communicate.

Things were no better for the male interns, especially the Black male interns, who were relegated to the filthiest rooms in the dorms the church used, the interns said.

“They basically separated all of the Black male interns onto one floor and everybody else was on a different floor,” Laurel said.

Former intern Linville said that she had knee surgery three months before she started the program in 2007 and that program leaders knew she was in no shape to do strenuous exercise.

“They didn’t care,” said Linville, who is 34 and from Oregon. “They would yell in our faces ... tell us to get down and do pushups, just scream.”

“There were two different fight nights,” said Danielle Ferguson, 31, who took part in the program from 2007 to 2008. “One of them was for the guys. And they really pumped it up. I mean, this is like the thing to do whether you wanted to fight or not.”

The bouts often ended with one of the combatants badly beaten and bloodied, Laurel said.

“A lot of the time they would pit somebody who was like really small against somebody that was really big,” Laurel said. “Just like a hypertoxic view of masculinity being important and a vital part of Christianity.”

The interns were also made to participate in marathon praying sessions at night, especially in 2007 and 2008, when Amy Stockstill was battling cancer. Linville said they were made to take part in “24-hour prayer nights” for her recovery and that when she died they were blamed.

“You guys didn’t have enough faith for her to be healed,” Linville recalled being told. “Looking back now, they were all hurting and they were taking it out on us.”

To be fair, the organization denied the "fight nights" and the said they didn't know about the racism...which they would do regardless of whether it happened or not, of course. I assume they're denying some of the other stuff too.

And of course, they can't be expected to know everything that an individual may do. But it is such an overall damning report that one can't help but think how could a religious place be so...I hesitate to use the word...evil.

This would probably get more traction in R&S.

That is a shocking news story. When you say this is an example of why we question, I think an answer should be provided to that statement that is in the form of a question.

Why do we question? To find out.

Many people don't want others to find out.

It's awful, but it is not shocking. This group is far from the only group doing crazy, abusive things in the name of Jesus.

Well, sadly, you are correct. It probably happens more than is reported. Having grown up in a small town Baptist church, behavior like this does not surprise me in the least.

BUT I have to point out how liberating Atheism has been for me. Freedom from religious doctrine, freedom from wasting my time with religious services, freedom from the anxiety of the mythology of "sin", freedom from the guilt of being human, freedom of *****w!pes who try to control other's lives.....All gone away with religion.

I understand that People do have choices in life, and sadly, sometimes, those choices can lead to one's human rights becoming jeopardized as the result of religions. Sometimes, a person will so desperately seek something in life, and religion will show up as a panacea, which turns out to be more quackery and fraud than help.

You and I have similar backgrounds as far as childhood religious teachings.

Personally, I find the Quiverfull cult FAR more shocking and disgusting, and they are much more mainstream.

I wonder more at the parents who enroll their kids into this type of nonsense.

At least the church have come to their senses and apologized.
