Which would make forming groups based on atheism a bit odd.
Anyhow, this just seems like a way to make atheism "religiousy". But unlike actual religious groups there is little reason to get together with a bunch of guys just because they are atheist.
I have to agree with you on this one but I think that these groups might actually be more prevalent in areas for those of us who live in very dominantly religious parts of the country where religion is very much the identifying factor in society. For those of us who are not religious and do not want to identify with religion it becomes hard to "fit in" and the only way to do so is really with other like-minded individuals - i.e- other Atheists. If I lived in New York, L.A. or Boston where people don't often pop questions like that then I really wouldn't be out looking for people because it's a non-issue. But, for some, like where I live, it is very much an issue.
I have to admit that I am not and have never been a very big fan of groups that advertise ideas as a way to formulate people. However, I often get very frustrated where I live in meeting people whose first words are "What church do you attend?" It's as if it has nothing to do with you the individual being a likeable person, a friendly person, or even a good person - it all depends on what church you go to. I understand that it can be an "icebreaker" in this part of the country but I always feel tired of having to discuss religion as a starter conversation. Most people want to know why you're an Atheist and then they want to ask questions and then it seems like the conversation dies. Maybe I'm just not a good conversationalist.
Anyway, I looked up local Atheists groups in my hometown and wouldn't you know it? In all the freaking places in the world, there is a very small group of Atheists/Humanists about 10 or 15 minutes from my house. There are not very many people in it but at least it's a start.
Troop,
The way you like and discuss science you would love the groups. In our group most of the discussions related to new breakthrough in technologies and science views. I did mention some one had told me I seemed to see science as some see religion, but I think it was the only mention of religion I heard.

Well, I think my wife and I are going to our Atheist Meetup today at 3 P.M. I have absolutely no idea what to expect and I don't do very well in large groups. So, I guess we'll see... I think later in the evening we're all supposed to get together and dance naked and sacrifice goats or something. It should be a lot of fun.

Humanoid,
You have an advantage over "Southern Godless Atheist" who live in the Bible belt. Living in LA and coming from the “Pits of Hell†you can find other godless atheist anywhere to relate too. Give us time and we will catch up but for now I think the groups help us grow in numbers here too.

I have never gotten into the goats thing except for goat cheese, but I have been know to dance naked and that is a real FULL MOON to dance with.
Good luck on your group meeting i hope they are as good as my meeting was.

Well, it's at a bar (that serves food) so I can't imagine it'll be that bad.

Well that wouldn't bother me either! In fact, I might suggest that as our next meeting place. Everyone else goes to church on Sunday's... Meanwhile, I go to Hooters and look at sexy women wearing skimpy clothes that are serving me beer. Why on Earth would I ever want to start believing???
June had never even thought in terms of "atheist social groups" until she read it here. (And June is friends with non-believers and believers, alike. June is an equal opportunity atheist.)

No. He would love M.I.T.
(And they would love him.)
