I'll congregate wherever there's free beer. I don't give a rat's ass what beliefs the people around me have.

Congregating sounds lonely to you?
I hope you can agree that congregations of people who have similar interests are not necessarily the products of lonliness.
It seeems to me that your statement comes from your own preconceived notion that atheists are lonely people because they don't believe in God.
Apparently, atheists do cluster together just like everybody else. And, like everybody else, not all atheists choose to cluster together with other atheists.

Some people like to attack that which they do not understand.

Like xians who go to church on Sunday and some other meeting during the week?
I thought their god was all-fulfilling.
Why do they have to do it with others all the time?

BTW, I don't believe I've ever spent time with someone just because they were atheist, there has to be something in common for me to want to share time. Not believing in a god thing never comes into play.

nah! Lonely is when you're the only athiest in a congregation of believers.

I don't know how you managed to read an attack in my post?

Sorry if I offended anyone, I was only surprised that athiests 'gather together'.

BTW I do not attend a church of any kind.
My faith is between me and God.

lonely? What? That sounds condescending to me. In any case, like minded individuals tend to seek out others like them so there are bound to be groups on anything and everything.

Riiiiiiight. Because since they're atheists, something is lacking of course. Uh huh. Personally, I'd make the statement that people who believe in a god are lacking something in their lives.

But my question to atheists is, um, why congregate? I don't understand what you get together to talk about. I mean, how do you get together to talk about what you don't believe in? I was at a beer tasting the other day, and part of the bar was cordoned off for a local branch of an atheist group. And there were lots of people there, seemingly engaged in frank discussion/conversations/etc.

I was dying to know...what were they meeting to discuss?

[FYI, I'm not Christian, though I do believe in god, a personal relationship with god, etc. I also believe (as my parents are Hindu) that everyone has a right to their own beliefs and that every religion has something to bring to the table. That is standard Hindu operating procedure. I'm just not personally into organized religion. I find it too manipulative.]

They congregate??

If they do I never heard of it. Why isn't it just possible to believe (or not) and not congregate at all?

I'd agree to that. People can't understand it IS possible to feel happy, fulfilled and be a good person without the need of religion. Religion may help some people be happy or good, but maybe just maybe some of us don't need that help. Or that isn't what WE need.
