I think they may be losing clout on a national level but I think in some state or local issues, they have some victories.
Here in AR, the Arkansas "Familly" Council, which is an extension of the ultra conservative Family Council, won a victory on banning "unmarried couples" (read:gay) couples from adopting children.
Of course if you're a single gay person you can adopt but I think they might try to go after that next election.

One can only hope that they will continue to lose clout in ALL areas.

My partner and I had our twins via surrogate/egg donor, and if these religious nuts had their way, not only would we not be able to be parents, surrogacy and IVF would also be illegal. I guess they'd be unhappy that our children exist.
I may in the minority but I think IVF should be illegal or at least more expensive with part of the money going towards advocating adoption.
There are plenty of kids that need adopting in the world and we're overpopulated anyway.

Enough with fear tactics from these crazy religious extremists.
I'd agree given the current situation. As a legal immigrant from "Kanada" and now a legal American citizen, I was understandably anti-socialist and joined the Republican Party as I exited the Naturalization Ceremony. Now, having monitored their fall from grace, the Gingrich, Bush 1 and Bush 2 Arrogance Years and the Palin Evangelical Threat I have thoroughly abandoned their sickening and patronizing "Holier Than Thou" message. When confronted by one of them with the quizzical, smirking doe-eyed question "But just why do you fear Christianity in politics?", I feel this cold hard anger, fear and loathing rising in my throat. It's like talking, face to face, with a mythical devil. http://img2.mysmiley.net/imgs/smile/evilgrin/evilgrin0003.gif (broken link)

The basics of managed conservatism have resulted in the once and future glory and promise of this country. Socialism appeals to the poor, the disadvantaged who have been shunned by greedy captialist pigs, the anti-corporate types, and the truly socially lazy. Entitlements, income re-distribution, class envy: all earmarks of socialism.

I hope that the thoughtful, rational public, yearning for a culture that recognizes and rewards greatness, altruism and social conservatism, but that also recognizes the need for social evolution and care for the disadvantaged, might abandon the evangelical voter base. Those folks, as I've elsewhere suggested, should be in their own lifeboat ("Evangelists in first, then the rest, if there's room!"), having sunk the good ship "Grand Republican" though their arrogance to date.

If it's demonstrably true that the Christian fundamentalists and the "Moral Majority" lost appeal and votes and influence, there really is cause for rejoicing in the streets!
