What are some good and high end kitchen appliances and how are they compared to one another? Best ones?

Viking, Subzero, Jenn-Air etc?

Guy Gunter is an old standby and we've always been very satisfied with them but there are probably scads of dealers now.

I had a Viking cook-top in my last house. About two months after it was installed, the entire top cracked-luckily it was still under warranty. It didn't cook any better than the GE I had previously had.
We have a Bosch dishwasher right now and, although it is extremely quiet, it is oddly configured for loading and doesn't do as well as much less expensive (but loud) Maytag I used to have.

Viking vs SubZero? Which one's better?

I haven't had any experience with Viking but our Sub-Zeros are awesome. Built like tanks and always repairable. An excellent choice if you're doing built-ins and plan to match your cabinetry.

Both are absurdly overpriced for being simple appliances that keep stuff cold. Unless you need to have a "status symbol" in your kitchen, there are plenty of options out there that can be had for 1/2 to 1/3 of the price of a Viking or SubZero refrigerator.

Au contraire! Our Sub-Zeros have been rock solid for 20 years. Each unit has separate motors so you can easily repair or upgrade any one of the four sections. They also stock parts indefinitely because these things are made to last a very long time.

But seeing that people move on average every 7 years, and Sub-Zero's are typically designed to be built-in and left with the house, why would someone care if their refrigerator was going to last 20 years? Now, if it's a typical fridge that goes with you when you move, that might be worth something, but why would I pay a huge premium for a refrigerator that will stay with the house?

Well, that's a good point. They say you'll get value out of a Sub-Zero if you sell, but in today's market who knows?

Maybe in a house that has the same quality level everywhere else as it does in the refrigerator, but most of the time you see a 48" SubZero or Viking in a house that has 4" baseboards and hollow-core doors- it's a "status sell". Unless spending $2k more on the refrigerator is going to net you $3k more on the sale, it's a waste of money.
