I too am in favor of a Metro Borough system. It would be a helluva lot easier than the city of Atlanta annexing several hundred square miles like our brethren to the West.

Similar to yours, but I would:

1. Have Atlanta annex the areas I've listed above.

2. This would then become the City of Atlanta and Fulton County--same boundaries.

3. The rest of North Fulton would be divided between Cobb and Forsyth.

4. The rest of South Fulton would be annexed by South Fulton cities.

5. Hapeville, East Point, and College Park would join Clayton County.

6. Union City and Fairburn would join Fayette.

7. Palmetto would join Coweta.

8. The rest of DeKalb would combine with the northern two-thirds of Rockdale.

9. The southern third of Rockdale would join Newton.

I would do much more, but this is the early part.

I know this is an old thread but I thought annexation fans might be interested in seeing what was done in the past. The biggest annexation took place in 1952, of course, when the city grew to nearly its present size. That annexation included Buckhead (i.e., the area north from Brookwood to the city limits, between I-75 and I-85), but it also included much larger additions to the west and south.

Do you have the direct link to this map?

I find it very interesting that a nice little square is formed in the unicporpoarted portion of Dekalb county north and east of Atlanta, with the follwing four corners (clockwise):
1. Northeast Corner of Atlanta
2. Southwest Corner of Chamblee
3. Northwest Corner of Decatur
4. Where Atlanta-in-Dekalb meets Atlanta-in-Fulton (where blue intersects with lime green)

This forms such a neat and tidy little annexable area. I looked closer on another map, and the Southwest Corner of Chamblee and the Northwest Corner of Decatur are roughly aligned by Clairemont Road.

Annexing this area would be a major score for the city: having Emory, the CDC, and parts of multicultural Buford Highway within the city limits is reason enough. Can someone explain why this hasnt been studied/proposed? Seems like a no-brainer.

EDIT: I am going to do some number crunching and start a new thread within the next day or two focused specifically on Atlanta annexing this parcel of DeKalb and what it would mean demographically. Stay tuned.

OMG!

You have no idea how long I have been looking for a map like this.

1 million+ kudos to you!

I myself have always wished Atlanta to br more street /pedestrian friendly and I guess more "urban " in the North east term of the word. Could Atlanta handle a million plus?
City of Atlanta Population:

2000 Census: 416,474
2010 Census: 420,003

That's FLAT....no growth compared to the Atlanta MSA (Metro Statistical Area):

2000 City Data: 4,112,198
2009 Census: 5,475,213

The City will never reach 1 Million without a land grab.

I don't think it's so important how many citizens are in the city limit. Granted, I don't think we want to see the population shrink, but whether the population is 500k or 1mm, I'm not sure is all too important. Personally, I like the the way the size "feels" as it is now. I like my neighbors, but don't want to live on top of them!

I think the population growth of the city is necessary if the city wishes to pull itself out of this rut were in, but you do make some valid points ansleypark but i wish Atlanta were capable of competing with major cities it really doesn't unless you count the airport but no one ever leaves the airport in the big picture of things its just a connection i wish it were more.
