we plan on removing our large tub ( that we never use) and replacing part of that space with a neo angle corner shower ( to be tiled, glass on front). existing shower, in a little room by itself with the toilet, gets taken out and replaced with wall configuration to include toilet and most of former shower space becomes linen closet.

got an estimate for 17,500 seems pricey

Um, you do have another tub in the home, right? Because not having a bathtub may make it harder to sell your home if you go to sell it.

Are you also re-tiling, changing fixtures, counter tops, vanities, toilet, etc? If so, that price would be very reasonable (depending on quality of materials)...bathrooms add up quickly.

no that's why it seemed a bit high. vanities, counters, faucets, floor ( except in toilet/closet room) mirrors, lights all stay

Well, I would get a couple more estimates....always wise to get 3 or more for such a large job, if for nothing else to validate the plan and pricing of the contractor you prefer (also to weed out a low-ball contractor who may cut corners or be dishonest). On the surface that sounds kind of high, I would definitely at least get 1 more estimate.
