I think it is because for those that frequent C-D, that information would not come as a big surprise. Most of us around here are avowed stat geeks
On the other hand, you can only take long term projections like that with a grain of salt. Who's to say what will happen over the next 30 years. Our fortunes can turn very sour in a short amount of time and the whole game would have to be reset.
For example, look at Las Vegas. 10 years ago they had a growth rate at near 50% and it seemed like the sky was the limit...then the recession hit and they not only started losing population but ended up with a worse economy than Detroit. Let me say that again, a worse economy than Detroit. I'm not saying that something bad will happen to change our fortunes, but it's not outside the realm of possibility.
That, and I think 8.3 million by 2040 is extremely conservative. My bet is that we'll hit 8 mill by 2025.
I was about to post this, but good thing I saw it! Yes, I think on all accounts, 8.3 Million is very conservative indeed. The ARC is notorious for underestimation - they still think Atlanta hasnt hit 500,000 yet.

Metro competition. 8.3 million people, 4.5 jobs...I wonder how many of these people will be under the age of 16? Wonder how many criminals this will create? The only way to truly escape criminals is the sky, meaning Atlanta have to start going vertical, instead of sprawling. I know many in the sticks think its safe & cuddlely out in the burbs, but the thugs are moving to the burbs now, so I can imagine what it would be in 30 years.
I think both roads and public transportation will grow as demand increases. Right now there just aren't that many people clamoring for it.
That's always a painful process though. We still haven't caught up to where we need to be and this city has been in a constant state of construction as long as I've been aware of it. We also don't live in the most progressive and forward thinking area or times so every change we try to make will have to be fought for tooth and nail.
I personally don't see the need to add millions more people overall to the metro. It would be nice if the inner core would fill in a bit more but my main concern is quality of life and 3-4 million more people moving into the area in such a short time isn't likely to improve it.
I agree. I think Atlanta and Macon will be combined into one big city
