If my headache is anything to go by (and it usually is) I would say the barometric pressure must be incredibly low. Don't mean to be alarmist, but I haven't had one this bad since the blizzard of '93.

I hope the '2-4inches' for North GA turns out to be the more accurate forecast.

If it's '6-8 inches' that will probably break all records for the metro Atlanta area.

not to mention that it'll keep the roads screwed up for at least a week- there's not enough equipment in the area to move that much snow in a timely fashion.

There was a very bad ice storm aroun '72---pretty much closed down the city for over a week. I am not looking forward to such an experience again.

I think metro Atlanta can deal with 3-5 inches of snow--it it involves a lot ice that will be the real problem.

NYC is said to be 'better prepared' for future snow, fwiw.

The NYC storm last month dumped 20 inches but the roads were actually drivable the next day. (and we were driving a little rental car, not 4-wheel-drive). The problems were the commuter trains couldn't keep the blowing and drifting off the essential "third rail" and the sanitation department in Manhattan had to go around all of the cars that were parked (under all of that snow) on the roads. Also, there they have to take the snow somewhere so they just can't plow it to the side.

The real mess was when the snow started melting and there were huge puddles (and I mean deep, cold ones) you had to navigate around. It was tough crossing the streets, taxis were impossible to get...

That said, I agreed to move down here to get away from all of that snow. It just seems to be following me.

The reports I heard indicated there were problems in some burroughs? Brooklyn---sanitation workers might have intentionally slowed down?

At any rate--someone with the sanitation department offered some sort of apology and said things would be different/better in the future.

I assume the GA DOT is taking proactive steps as we speak.

It's not GDOT that will be the problem - it's the individual towns and counties. The interstates may be clear, but if you can't get to them because the local roads aren't plowed, that doesn't do much good. Most towns don't even own a plow, yet alone enough equipment to effectively handle 6" of snow.
