Although I'm thinking Fairfax county is going to be a better and cheaper jurisdiction than Arlington county.
If the government is kicking in a couple of grand a month that should help with the quality of life.

I find it odd how D.C. posters boost their city but they always lurk this board. It's so strange.

Is that directed at me? Well I'm not lurking I made a comment. Just because I don't live in Atlanta doesn't mean I can't make a comment. I'm from Columbus, GA and I've spent plenty of time in the ATL so while I'm no expert I know a little something.

I live in Arlington now and I hate the cost of living but I'm making it work just like the millions of folks in the DC area do everyday. Cost of living is one advantage that Atlanta has always had over major East Coast cities. It doesn't really matter though, its not a competition.

Is Arlington really THAT much more expensive than Atlanta? I should know better than to trust craigslist but I see a good bit of 1BR apts well under $1K on there. Having lived in NYC there's no comparison as far as cost.

Terrence81, I'm (hopefully) moving up to DC within the next couple years. I'm probably going to be working around the west part of DC itself. Any decent areas you can recommend for a 1BR under $1200? I'd actually prefer Virginia over DC or Maryland.

Thanks

Atlanta and DC metro is no comparison..We moved up here from Atlanta and found it shocking how things were so much more expensive..And not just housing. Daycare, healthclub memberships.etc. But housing is biggest factor. You would have much easier time affording Marietta than Arlington.

Wow. I'm also quite curious as to what the max payout is in Atlanta for Section 8 housing.

Also, I'm a bit confused. I thought the purpose of Sec 8 wasn't to pay your entire rent, but to help with rent. I know a few Sec 8 landlords and they usually get the majority of their rent payments from the gov't and the balance from their tenants. I thought HUD paid a portion and the tenant was expected to pay a portion.

I'm not hating or being rude; I know people fall on hard times and stuff... but dang, all jokes aside, if I could get the $345/week max in unemployment, $600 monthly max in food stamps, and a voucher that paid my entire rent... I truly would not need to work. Like seriously. **not being facetious**

There are plenty of apartments under $1K in the DC area. The question is are they in good areas? Are they decent places are grimy places. A 1BR in Arlington is going to lean towards the latter I'm afraid.

Thanks
Don't want to get the thread off topic so feel free to PM me. But yeah you can find apartments like that but there's usually a catch. Oh yeah Virginia in general tends to be more expensive with worse traffic than Maryland.

Well I was on unemployment last summer and made around that area. You do have to show proof that you're trying to work. You have to go to interviews and they verify with the potential employer that you did indeed apply and interview. However I do see your point. I can't speak for others but I definitely worried about what happens if my unemployment were to run out. So glad it didn't.

I was on unemployment 2 years ago, Terrence. There were a few extensions passed in DC that allowed me to continue past the normal 6 months. I think now, those receiving benefits can go up to 99 weeks in many cases (I think the unemployment rate of their state has to exceed the nat'l average, if I'm not mistaken). But even without the added extension, you can collect for a year. And though some counties monitor your job search activities, most of them now are so understaffed and overtaxed that they don't have the resources to really check. Even when I was on unemployment I never once turned in those green sheets, nor did I ever have to verify anything.

Shoooooot, a year's paid vacation with the risk of not finding a job by the time the benefits expire? I'd take that gamble. I have no dependents and no credit card debt. I can defer my student loans, and continue paying my car note and still have $1000 left over each month. LOL.

Though I'm making light of it, I truly do realize that people do fall on hard times; I was one of them. Though I never benefited from Sec. 8 or food stamps, I'm grateful that my unemployment insurance helped me out and I'm grateful to be gainfully employed.

All in jest....

Well... 79% jest...
