Ok so i know people ask a lot, but I just accepted a job offer in Decatur, on Panthersville road, you may be able to guess what it is. Anyways, I've read about how terrible S Dekalb is (whether its true or not, Im still unsure), and really need some advice on where to look for a place to RENT. I've read the sticky so I'll address those questions first and if theres anything else that would be helpful to know about me or my needs I'll be happy to answer. Thanks for the help!

1. Budget- trying to determine still what is reasonable for a good area?? I MUST have a 2 car garage (we both have old muscle cars) and fenced yard for large breed dog... how much am I looking at ya think? Found a lot online around $900, but they may have been in less desirable parts of the city. Combined income of $80k
2. House/Condo/Townhome? House
3. Employment Status(commute/work from home)- work on Panthersville Rd
4. Children(public school vs. private)- NOPE!
5. Suburban or Urban lifestyle preference or a mix of the two- Im from Columbus, and have been living in Athens the past 2 years, I've enjoyed both. Think I'll answer with suburban, less hustle n bustle is better
6. Easy access to public transit, important or not?- going to burn my own gas
7. Preferable demographics of desired neighborhood.- just want it to be safe. My fiance travels a lot with his job, Im 24 WF...I've been known to tote a gun, but prefer not to use it

Synopsis:
* Renting house
* Dog Friendly
* 2 car garage
* fenced yard
* safe neighborhood

Hope this is a workable list!

Sounds like you will be working in 30032 and could easily live in 30033/North DeKalb Mall/DeKalb Medical Center. Medlock Park might work--50's homes--safe neighborhood--the price range is probably around $1,000-1200.

If I had to guess --it would be GA Regional--some good things going on out there--lots of progressive people rehabilitating an antiquated system. If that is what you are going to do --Welcome to Atlanta. The campus is well designed--some incredible spots --very calming. Redbud trees. I've done a bit of volunteer work there.

If you are doing something else--also, welcome to Atlanta.

South Dekalb would definitely not be my first choice to live but I live close to that area. I'm in the process of moving but it hasn't been THE WORST area by any means. I imagine you're going to work for the GBI (Panthersville); you could look for homes in Ellenwood, Rex, or even Stockbridge to give you simple, easy access to work. Ellenwood is literally minutes away (but it's outside of this area) and you don't necessarily even need to take the highway. Ellenwood is spread across Dekalb, Henry, & Clayton Counties. Rex & Stockbridge (as well as McDonough, depending on how far you want to drive -- 20 min minimum) are all along I-675. It's a bypass between I-285 & I-75. All of those are nice areas, outside of the I-285 perimeter, off of the public transportation line, but not really far away.

Take care!
