The case for horse racing in Georgia *| ajc.com

There are multiple tests ahead for the initiative, which would have to be approved by the Legislature, Georgia voters and voters in the counties where track or off-track betting facilities would be located.

Past efforts to bring horse racing to Georgia encountered strong opposition from those who do not want to expand the reach of legalized gambling.
“We would oppose it — we do and have opposed it strongly,” said Jerry Luquire, president of the Georgia Christian Coalition.
. Supporters of racing say that, between breeding and racing operations, the industry could create at least 10,000 new jobs in Georgia, while providing the state with another source of badly needed revenue.

I personally don't approve of horse or dog racing based on animal cruelty and other issues with animal treatment. I have no issue with gambling or casinos, but I think there are better ways to do it than horse racing.

I grew up a mile away from one of the largest and most famous horse tracks in the US, so I understand it, but do not like it.

I find it intresting that GA wants Horse racing, with we will make all this money, make all these low paying jobs...

Few years ago The voter of Pennsylvania appoved slots/table game to subsidize horse racing to keep the horse racing alive (with the same it will retain jobs, and keep gambing money from going out of state).

The demographic of horse racing has changed since the 1930's when people would go to the track hang out all day and watch, Back then more of america was doing shift jobs and people had day time free to do that kind of activity.

I just don't see the demand for this. Besides the cruelty issues, horse racing seems like an outdated, aristocratic sport.

10,000 jobs seems ridiculously high for this. Did these people just pull that number out of their a$$es? There are much better ways to create much better jobs.

Thank you, Neil. Took the words right out of my mouth.

You're correct, but one is not mutually exclusive of the other, and because we can't solve every problem doesn't mean we do nothing. That logic is flawed.

I work to end animal cruelty in whatever form, and I put my money where my mouth is, unlike many. However, zoos, circuses. and other places where animals are abused for no good reason are in a different league from eating animals for nutrition.

Cruelty? hardly. I've been to the track many times, and let me tell you, the horses that win KNOW it!! Many thrive on the competition. They are treated cushy these days, in fact, the barns in the NY tracks are on camera all the time to prevent horse doping (and that's the case in many other jurisdictions also).

Not called the Sport of Kings for nothing - Secretariat is the best example of how a horse can be ennobled. Take your PETA mindset elsewhere to more appropriate issues like overcrowded pet stores and zoos.

Sure, KY Derby horses are treated well because it is in the owner's economic best interest. When these horses can't race and are no longer valuable from a breeding perspective, many of the animals who are not of Secretariat's league are put down, out to pasture, neglected, etc. Dog racing results in much more abusive and horrendous treatment. No. The animal racing industry is, in KY opinion, not admirable.
