The AJC has photos of the premiere of GWTW in Dec 15, 1939. More than 71 years ago.

Can't imagine a spectacle like that at Five Points. Not even the Peach Drop. And the Lowe's Grand is much further up the street. I think the first building on the left is the William Oliver, the next Muse's, and in the Middle the Candler.

Nice to see we have some connection to the past.

Whats really creepy and makes you realize how short life is, is that most if not all of those people you see are more than likely already dead.

That's the way most western civ cities are. Atlanta is one of, if not THE, blackest.

Don't forget the fact this was the height of the Jim Crow era. Even the film's black cast members were barred from attending the premier, including Hattie McDaniel who won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.

Maybe a movie that made black slaves appear to be so happy to do Massa's bidding that it almost seemed voluntary didn't appeal to the general black population.

I love GTWT, and I've read the book several times now, but the one thing that sticks in my craw about it is its portrayal of slavery as some kind of mutual arrangement between the blacks and the whites, especially in the movie version. However, seeing as how it was made in 1939, those were different times, and Hollywood took more license with reality back then. Compare it to the view of slavery portrayed in "Roots", 38 years later.

Cool picture, BTW.

Love the photo. My grandmother and (then 9 year old) father were in attendance. My grandmother was so proper that I can't imagine her reaction to Rhett Butler not giving a damn in the presence of her young 'un.

Remember...that was before suburbanization and white flight. Atlanta had street cars as I think that picture clearly shows some rails. The city's population was 300k with 820k metro. A city was a place to work AND live in.

If you have some time visit

ATLANTA TIME MACHINE

Especially the downtown section to compare what was and what is there now. Wish they built elsewhere and left downtown like some time capsule.

For example, the Hurt Building is on the left
