So, do "the holidays" start on Columbus Day around here now?

One of my co-workers had WSB playing on the radio in her office yesterday. I wasn't paying much attention until a guy in an ad for a local home improvement company informed me that now is the time to get my home ready for all that holiday company I'm going to have.

Really, I guess that's true. Depending on the size and complexity of the job, if you want something finished between Thanksgiving and Christmas you might need to get going on it now. But still! It's barely even October.

It reminds me of how a couple of the local adult contemporary (are they still using that term?) stations seem to have an ongoing competition to be the first to start playing Christmas music. I think B98.5 started the week before Thanksgiving last year. Maybe one of them will start on Halloween night this year.

And I think I remember Phipps Plaza having a big ol' "Happy Holidays" sign dangling off the front of the building on an 80-degree day last year, either right before or after Halloween.

(Just as I was typing this, a Sears ad on my Pandora station let me know that I should come in now to get new Kenmore appliances for all my holiday baking.)

The week before Thanksgiving isn't bad. Some stations start it on Halloween night or as in the case of K104.7 here in Charlotte last year, had a "Christmas Preview" the week BEFORE Halloween.

Putting some papers in the recycling bin today, I noticed a recent flyer from the American Girl store at North Point Mall. "DINE TOGETHER in MERRY MEASURE fa la la la" it says and "Join us in stores for HOLIDAY-THEMED EVENTS."

Oh boy - it seems like retailers are really nervous about this year's holiday shopping season and want to make sure we spend, spend, spend.

Keep in mind that many stores only get into the 'black' revenue wise during the holiday shopping season. The rest of the year, they are in the red and actually losing money.

Here in Orlando, Belk was stuffed with lovely brown tweed sweaters and orange turtlenecks. Meanwhile, outside it's 90+ degrees and 60% humidity. UGH
