This thread is like listening to Nancy Pelosi, 'We have to pass it to know what's in it' Ain't gonna pass Cobb, the regular SPLOST won by only 57 votes. The politicians already screwed it up. Can't tell you whats in it and what's not, only that they HAVE to have our money or there will be a disaster. Scare tactics as usual.

It's not that hard to find what is on the project list...

http://www.ajc.com/multimedia/archive/01160/PDF__Final_project_1160778a.pdf (broken link)

This whole process has been very transparent. The projects on the list are ones that can be completed within the 10 year time frame and fixes several major bottlenecks such as the 285/400 interchange and the 85/285 interchange aka Spaghetti Junction.

It won't be a disaster, but there will be a gradual decline in growth, which is not good. Do you think our current infrastructure will be able to support future growth? If it can't, there won't be much at all. It's not scare tactics - it's reality. Businesses and talent are already avoiding metro Atlanta due to our negative perception of traffic congestion and the fact we aren't committed to doing anything about it.

I agree -- the process has been extremely transparent and the project list has always been available. There've been tons of public meetings as well.

They can't get working on Spaghetti Junction soon enough for me. That area alone wrecks my commute home every evening due to the congestion and the idiots who refuse to wait in the exit only lanes.

Additionally, they are saving gas and helping keep the roads free for those of us who prefer to drive.
It's hard to argue with a win-win like that.
And that's the argument for transit. It may not be for everyone, but the people who prefer it will help other commuters who prefer to drive, alone, it their cars.

That's why local businesses have donated over $5 million for advertisement of the T-SPLOST. Businesses want more transit and avoid having their workers stuck in traffic.

Why are you still going on about the Cobb light rail line? It's been cut from the TIA.

This article isn't about Atlanta per se but it's relevant to our thinking about transportation. This transportation referendum gives us a chance to get ahead of the curve again -- I sure hope we don't blow it.

According to Time, we pay more to drive than we spend on taxes.

Yeah, driving is pretty much the unsung thing that ruins us financially that nobody realizes. And that doesn't even take into account the value of your time spent wasted sitting in traffic.

My question is, how do we get an undereducated population to understand this?

If people could see and acknowledge the (hidden) expenses of driving, there would be far more ire directed at driving costs than at taxes geared towards public transit. I don't think it would make people magically embrace taxation, of course, but to my mind this is the necessary step to persuading the public to consider tax-supported transit more rationally.

It's a national security issue. We're sending billions of dollars we don't have to people who don't like us. Our oil usage is one of the greatest transfers of wealth out of this country there has ever been. And what do we get for it? Fumes.
