Trees are not something you can take in as a feature like you can a lake, mountain, or even a river from the city. Trees are nice but they don't have the same effect. As you move toward something like Stone Mountain, it catches your eye and gives a place a powerful anchor.

Yes, and so does New York City and New Dehli.

Trees don't cut it. (no pun intended). The trees are ambient, not a particular feature.
Well, trees are all we have, and its actually a fairly unique feature for a large city. People from San Diego or Cleveland or Houston or any other relatively barren city find our trees just as beautiful as a mountain or lake.

You can take in the beauty of Atlanta's trees by going on the canopy walk or going to the top of a skyscraper or even the Darlington Apartments:

It's also cool when flying into the city and taking in the canopy from the air.

Seattle can keep their stupid mountain, I'd rather have sunlight

In all seriousness we have a sizable river, two enormous lakes, and the Blue Ridge Mountains all within an hour and the Atlantic if you can spare another two. It'd be nice to have something in the city but it's not like we're in the middle of Nebraska or something... THAT would be depressing.

Atlanta's trees/forest/canopy is very unique for a large global/world/international city.

They should've built something original--something connected to Atlanta or the American South.

Not Wannabe Paris Suburban Office Park Monument.

The arch itself is cool, and of very high quality.

I personally don't see any reason why Atlanta can't have monuments in the classical style just as well any other city does. We've had many schools, offices, homes, churches and other buildings in the classical style and they're quite characteristic of Atlanta. Think of Neel Reed, Franklin Burnham, A. Ten Eyck Brown, Phllp Trammel Schutze, Pringle and Smith, and so many others who defined Atlanta's classical style. Buildings like the State Capitol, the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals, the Carnegie Library, the Empire Building, the original Equitable Buidling and countless others.

I think it's the location that makes this look tacky. If it were sitting in Piedmont Park or at a major intersection, it would be an absolute knockout.

I agree that it is not the most unique monument, but would you guys rather it not have been built at all? It is a very handsome monument that many cities would be happy to have.
