I am NOT a frequent flyer (last time I flew was 5 years ago)....I have an upcoming trip to NC and will be flying AirTran to Charlotte, with a layover in Atlanta both ways. The layovers are long, so I will have plenty of time to get from one place to another, but I am still extremely nervous about navigating such a busy airport.
Anyone have any tips for this flying novice on some simple ways to tackle the Atlanta airport?
Thanks!

Yes. When you get off the plane, if they haven't announced the connecting flight gates on your plane, find out where your gate is. There may be an Airtan Employee who meets the flight and is standing there as you deplane. If not go to the main hallway of the terminal (will generally be straight out the door after you come up from the plane) and you will see these huge arrival and departure boards. First, you locate you destination, then you make sure that it is Airtran, then locate the gate.

Go to the gate first to make sure you know where it is and confirm that it is your flight . Then you get a meal etc and are confident you know where you are departing from.

Good advice. While the airport is huge and busy it is extremely logically laid out and very easy to get around. No weird twists and turns like many airports that have started rather small and subsequently been expanded. You'll pleasantly surprised.

Atlanta airport is very easy to connect at. The Concourse are long and stright. With a Train (people mover) that runs underground the goes beween them. Most Aitran go out of Concourse C, with a few out of D.

If your layover is too long get on the Marta train and ride around the city to kill time

FYI You will need many Hours to Take Marta into ATL and back (and do anything) . BTW there is a food court in Concorse E if you don't like the food option in Con C/D.
