I hope they make it a bit classier of a joint like they did with the Lindbergh location.
It is a conversion of an existing building. Waffle House is an Atlanta based company with a big following around the country - why not have a showcase WH on Centennial (it will be larger than the standard WH and have lots of WH memorabilia). It is better than the tacky t-shirt shop that occupied the building before. If we have more local businesses like WH open restaurants and retail around Centennial, there'd be less ignorant posts about how nothing happens in downtown after 6 pm (not referring to anyone that posted on this forum, but people who post on ATL forums in general).

Since when? I graduated in 2006 and we didn't have one! That's probably a good thing though...
It's in the new science building off Piedmont Avenue, near the rec center.

The Waffle House is exactly what downtown needs. It's open 24/7 and will put more people on the street. It fills a space that has been a crumbling asphalt parking lot for half a century. It's clean and family friendly. It has a long Atlanta tradition and is a cultural icon. Waffle House has been an employer for thousands of Atlantans and has supported many charitable causes.

I truly don't understand the complaints about Waffle House eats. It's not "fast food" or "factory food." Each meal is cooked individually. All the ingredients are fresh. I can't think of anything on the menu that's greasy or fried other than bacon, sausage or burgers, which are cooked on the grill for each order and served immediately. If there's any other way to cook items like that, what is it? They serve Smithfield bacon, Jimmy Dean sausage, Minute Maid OJ and all their condiments are top of the line. Their coffee is excellent and dependable.

No, the Waffle House isn't the home of complex haute cuisine, but it's fresh, solid fare. Prices are reasonable and the staff is legendary.

And for fans of Atlanta's glitzy Ritz Carlton hotels in downtown and Buckhead, you have Waffle House to thank. Their developer, W.B. Johnson made his fortune with Waffle House before turning to luxury hotels.

Arjay you're exactly right. Well except for the part about it replacing a parking lot; my understanding is that it's going in the building that houses the tacky souvenir shop on the opposite corner.

Bacchanalia it is not - but who cares? I'm confident this will look better than the usual WH, and it's perfectly practical for the times we live in. It's going to activate an edge of COP that desperately needs it.

I would love to see a "properly" done waffle house in downtown. I think all-glass, multi-story, facade in the corner of a building will be much cooler than some bound-to-fail food concept from NYC or SF. I would also love to see something more gritty and unique, like the Federal Donut in Philly.

Exactly my thoughts. I'm excited about this news!

Am I hearing this right? Waffle House isn't greasy, isn't fast food and has "fresh" ingredients?

Yeah okay, a company who mainly receives their revenue from drunk customers and truckers isn't going to be serving greasy, cheap, unhealthy, quick to prepare meals. And it isn't factory food? If I can go to any grocery store, buy a box of frozen sausage patties of Jimmy Dean, buy a tube of concentrated OJ, loaves of Wonderbread, butter with grease in it, pre-sliced packaged bacon, cheap cuts of beef, boxes of pancake mix, "maple syrup" that isn't made from maple syrup, pre-mixed beaten egg yolks, frozen shredded hash browns, how is that not factory food? I can get all the same ingredients at a grocery store and it all came from some manufacturing plant or processing center, stuffed in a box or bag, shipped hundreds of miles on an 18 wheeler, to the grocery store or Waffle House.

Even the crap you can get from the grocery store isn't what I'd consider fresh or high quality.

Well, it's Waffle House, so you absolutely going to get southern breakfast food. And yes it will be fattier than you should eat. But, hey, as I tell my kid, it's SOMETIMES food, not ANYTIMES food. And this location? Most of those people will be there from SOMETIMES food.

I'm cool with this, mostly because WH is an Atlanta based chain and this one will sort of run with that.

BTW - a lot of northerners who come to visit me want to go to WH. They like it and have nothing similar, according to them.

Healthwise, you can get a decent healthy meal there if you just go for a couple of eggs, toast, and fruit. Nobody FORCES you to get the huge plates!

Atlanta could do better than a Waffle House next to Centennial Park, I understand the cultural link Waffle House has with Atlanta, but lets use some foresight and see how this might play out.

It's downtown Atlanta... other than white collar types heading to work and tourists wanting to see Coca Cola or CNN, the other primary inhabitant of downtown Atlanta are homeless people.

Waffle House next to Centennial Park... locals think its a good idea and adds more stuff to do in downtown after 6, what they don't realize is that other than drunk GSU and GT students, the only people that will primarily take advantage of a 24/7 WH next to Centennial Park will be homeless people and pandhandlers.

Great so now WH is next to Centennial Park, because of this, now Centennial Park becomes the main hangout and congregating area for Atlanta's homeless and a bunch of panhandlers.

Is that what Atlanta wants?

Waffle House DOES actually have really good waffles and coffee. Everything else they serve there messes up my stomach though.
