It depends on who you speak with. For educated, well paid people, Atlanta has hurt itself because its seen as a low income, low quality of life place to live.

But for the lower income, especially from the NE, Atlanta is still seen a great place to live. What the people here do not understand is that unlike so many other cities in the US, low and middle class housing has tumbled just like the high end all over Atlanta. That means more than just housing has collapsed in ATL. In your state, values have certainly sunk but are now actually rising in some cities.

I think there is A LOT of truth to this!!!!!!

Atlanta seems to be most attractive to people who don't have jobs, hoping they will come here and find jobs. An influx of unemployed people does not a great economy make.

Many educated and skilled people do not want to deal with the hassles of living in Atlanta. If they are attracted to the urban lifestyle with mass transit etc. etc. etc., they tend to go to places that already have it instead of coming here and complaining about Atlantic Station.

Wendy's HQ Leaving Atlanta for Ohio - ABC News
We did not lose anything that we never really gained.
Wendy's is based and has been based in Dublin Ohio, it was just due to the Arby's merger, which was one of the largest mistakes Wendy's ever made. All they did was consolidate their world headquarters brining some exec's back to Dublin.

Now, lets look at other items. Primerica, Asbury Group, NCR, all totalling over 2,000 positions to the Atlanta metro. All new World Headquarter locations. Is it outside the parameter, yes, but Atlanta must stop in regard to it's thinking that if it is not in Atlanta proper (small georgraphic) then somehow it is not Atlanta.

Not sure if serious

The ONLY thing that draws people to Atlanta is jobs (or the hope of jobs). I can't think of any other reason to live here. Do you see tourists coming to Atlanta? "OMG Coca Cola, CNN, Stone Mountain, sooooo cooooooool!!!"

There are some places that people have the desire to move to just for the sake of the place itself... New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Boston, Seattle, south Florida, Hawaii...

Atlanta isn't one of them. It's "attraction" is on-par with Detroit, St. Louis, and Cleveland.

If someone is selling snake oil to people in the Northeast that Atlanta is some kind of magical city with streets paved with gold ("that must explain all the traffic"), well, at least people will get wiser when they get here.

Don't forget about Porsche!!! They moved their headquarters from Dunwoody to Atlanta.

But then I guess you have to think about the AJC that moved from Atlanta to Dunwoody.

But that Porsche set-up is suppose to be something pretty awesome.

Obviously you haven't traveled the rest of the South. FYI - Florida is not in the South.

You need to take this comedy show on the road.

NCR didn't bring 2k HQ jobs to metro Atlanta. Close to half of those were low paying manufacturing jobs in Columbus. They had a significant presence in Duluth already and probably still total fewer jobs than they had in Atlanta metro 8-9 yrs ago (Mark Hurd's a downsizing master). The company has lopped off 1/3 of its employees in the last ~5yrs and won't be on the F500 in a year or so so basically they're living off Georgia's generosity. It's kept the CEO in the private jet a bit longer given he's still living in NYC and commuting.

Primerica has been in Duluth for decades so those aren't exactly new jobs either. Asbury brought 70 jobs (probably fewer than NCR cuts in a bad week). We probably paid all the exec's bonuses (and relo costs) for a decade w/ that deal.

What we need to ask is how much in incentives it took to get us here. These transplants ties to GA tend to be tenuous at best. They move w/ the job and given how terrible NCR has been in the long term, if they stuck by NCR...there's not much else they're qualified for. What we could do instead is try to keep our most educated populace in state (forgivable student loans to UGA/GT/GSU grads w/ high GPA). Avg starting salary for a GT grad is in the 60k+ range. Give them a reason to stay in state and you're more likely to build long term tax base. Companies get a bigger pool of relatively cheap/well educated labor and a greater willingness to invest in the area. Instead we buy some faded brands w/ huge tax breaks that leave w/ the next round of tax breaks some other state more desperate than us waves at them.
