Hey guys, we moved to Dallas about 6 weeks ago with our 5yo, 3yo and infant. We homeschool and I was wondering what kinds of activities there are in the area that are free that would be great for families to do...places that are okay to visit with little kids. I am looking for places we can go to enrich our homeschool lifestyle. This could be anything that relates to history, nature or farming, science or just recreational like a nice park. Indoor or outdoor. I would prefer ideas that are within an hour drive from Dallas, please. Cheap is okay, too, but free is preferred because we try to do something every week.

Hike the Chattahoochee NRA. There are several sections.

Kennesaw Mountain and Stone Mountain are both low cost (although you won't want to haul the infant and the 3 year old all the way to the tops).

Fernbank Science Center is free, although the exhibits are limited now that they don't have the Fernbank Forest anymore. They have regular planetarium shows. They do have an observatory, but of course, that is open only at night.

The MLK center I believe is free. The tour of his boyhood home is interesting.

Annual memberships reduce the cost of multiple trips to some of the museums/attractions. Many of them have "homeschool days." The ones at the Carlos Museum are very well done. Atlanta History Center also has them. The Atlanta Zoo, Fernbank Natural Science Museum (or alternatively the Natural Science Museum in Cartersville if that's closer-may actually be a better museum) and High Museum have annual memberships as well.

I think he accidentally posted this in the wrong sub-forum. He wanted things to do in Dallas, not Atlanta.

When they are a little older, the CDC has a museum that is open to the public (actually a branch of the Smithonian), and afterward Lulwater park for a picnic is nice, or just stroll the Emory campus.

thought of another one-DeKalb Farmer's market near Decatur or the Georgia State Farmer's market in Forest Park. You can show them different foods from around the world.

Some of these may be further than an hour, but I thought these were worth adding to your list...

Tellus Science Museum in Cartersville: Tellus Science Museum - Cartersville, GA
High Shoals Falls
Tallulah Gorge State Park
Children's Museum in Atlanta
Noah's Ark Animal Sanctuary in Locust Grove (free)
Zoo Atlanta (you can get free tickets if you watch a certain video at the public library, ask your librarian)
Kennesaw Mountain Battlefield Park
Still Family Farm

Welcome, and have fun!
