Gwinnett Daily Post | Ga. developer plans $1B gambling complex in Gwinnett

Hmm, could this really happen?

What, exactly, is a video lottery terminal like? Can they just have regular video slots that are run by the lottery, or will they have boring lottery graphics? When I play slots, I like my Ghostbusters and Batman mega machines!

What do you think about this? I love the idea of a casino....I'm not sure I want it this close to my house, though.

I do think it's interesting to once again see Gwinnett county pick up an idea that Atlanta has repeatedly dropped the ball on. Could Gwinnett profit radically off Atlanta's inability to do something like this, or is it a disaster waiting to happen?

What are the odds of it actually happening?

Discuss!!!!!!

Atlanta's inability has nothing to do with Atlanta but with the state of Georgia, which continues to oppose casinos. Governor Deal has vocally said he would not support casinos. I personally don't oppose them, but I don't have any political clout in this backwards state.

Correct you are. I was so excited by the headline I failed to realize that. Still, you gotta wonder why he would plan this in Gwinnett instead of Atlanta if he didn't run into some friction there.

This is far enough away from my house that I'm not worried about proximity. I am, however, worried about traffic on I-85 and Buford Highway that it might create.

Certainly a lot of questions! My hunch is it will never get beyond initial planning.

Ok, here are my two cents. I can not understand how a casino will "destroy family values" and lead to more divorces and our incredible amount of strip clubs and gentlemans clubs don't? This is why I can see our state as a prime location for casinos, you don't hear Connecticut and Washington complain about crime rates and destroyed family values associated with neighborhoods around their casinos. I don't understand how we doing for the bill but they do? Come on that's ridiculous. It will most definitely help more than hurt anything.

It's basically just a fear mongering religious tactic that they use to scare people. And those that aren't bright enough to think for themselves usually fall for the bait. I used to love going to the casino down in Shorter a few years ago. Only reason I don't now is because of the distance but if there were one here i'd definitely go. Georgia can be so backwards sometimes, hell I was surprised they actually voted for the lottery.

I agree entirely, for everything that seems intelligent that is done is answered with something so ridiculously retarded that it negates the intelligent thing. It is the prime example of the saying "1 step forward, 2 steps back".

If a casino is done, it must be done right and with the full blessing of the government.

I made the trip to Victoryland a couple of years ago, and it's the thing that concerns me the most.

I don't know the full story (I heard it involved some kind of corruption where the casino was used to provide kickbacks in the form of payouts, but I don't know for sure), but when I went there, all of the video machines had been removed and that part of the casino wasn't even open. All that was left was video greyhoud racing. That great big and probably once fun building was doing nothing more than hosting a handful of people watching greyhounds on TV and betting on them. And these were not the most savory people. In fact, they were downright disgusting.

If we get a casino, I want it to be as no holds barred as possible with no possibility that it can ever be shut down. I would rather have nothing than what Victoryland was when I was there. It was absolutely horrible and depressing.

Legalize gambling, then build a full-out Vegas style casino. Don't half-ass a casino like Victoryland and it end up being shuttered after it is found to be illegal.

OH HELL NO! I am not opposed to casinos, but no business of any kind should be guaranteed it'll never be shut down.

A video lottery terminal is basically a boring video game, where people tend to spend A LOT less than they would a "normal" slot machine. The games on them vary.

I see absolutely no reason why regular slot machines cannot be done in such a way that State law would dictate that a set percentage of their revenue would also go to the HOPE scholarship. They see gambling not as a sin, but as a possible block of revenue for the lottery - but again, they call the shots under the dome - they could easily set the laws up to allow everything from Horse racing to card games, with a percentage of the money having to go toward HOPE. It's NOT hard to figure out.

It would however, be interesting to see if Gov. Deal also has any personal past history/dealings with the developer that wishes to build this gaming facility (or owns land it will be built on).
