The AJC reports that long time sports writer Furman Bisher died.

Sports writer Furman Bisher dies at 93 *| ajc.com

At 93! The guy retired in 2009 after 59 years with the AJC. How many people could do that?

The guy was a sports writer veteran before I was even born.

I will miss him....and especially his Thanksgiving Day column......he was an Atlanta and Southern institution.....a throwback to what a Southern Gentleman once was and a sports writer icon. He did an amazing job of bridging the gap between what sports was in the South to what sports became today.......RIP Furman.....

What's amazing to me is that WSB is celebrating its 90th year. Furman Bisher knew that era although not Atlanta as he was born and raised in North Carolina. But he's been in Atlanta since 1950. Yeah, a tie to old Atlanta and the South was lost.

Well said, northwinds, he was a classic.

I remember how I used to look forward to his columns after the Masters, a Bulldog or Yellow Jacket battle, a World Series or any great sporting event.

Yep, I don't really follow golf but always read his Master's columns. Its obvious, based upon the number of posts here, that few of the young whipper-snappers even had an opportunity to read him....their loss. I grew up with Munson on Saturday afternoons and Furman's sports columns...we've lost a couple of legends recently.
