My husband and I are planning on moving to Atlanta within the next 6 months. My husband and I really want a new construction house, close to downtown, costing no more than $290,000. I have done a lot of research and it appears like campcreek might be strong possiblity. I have heard that there is a lot of growth and the area is improving. We don't have any kids and don't plan on having any for the next few years so school systems are not really a concern. Does anyone have any opinons about campcreek? I am somewhat hesitant because I heard that there is a lot of crime there. If someone currently lives in this area I would definately appreciate your opinion regarding crime and any other significant factors. I would also appreciate suggestions about other areas close to downtown.

Camp Creek is up and coming and booming with development. This has been a long time coming as the area is close to the airport and fairly close to downtown. The nearby Cascade and Sandtown areas both have a singnificant concentration of middle-to-upper income households. Also, if you or your husband like golf, there are a bunch of nice golf courses in the area.

You may also want to consider Mableton, which actually starts just outside 285 on Veterans Memorial Hwy on the westside. Although some of the new developments are pretty highly priced already, there are still some within your range. It's also in the "redevelopment" stage, but more b/c of industrial use than slums (except Bankhead Courts, which is supposed to be demolished in the next couple years). Your best bet would be to look at some very young resales (ie, < 3 years old) in the area. I would NOT buy new construction right now b/c (a) builders always mark up new homes way above market and (b) it's such a buyer's market right now you can get an amazing deal.

Camp Creek is very nice. I have a friend who just moved over there from New York and he LOVES it. Everything you need is right under your fingertips from shopping to groceries. Check out Princeton Lakes, they have new homes starting in the low 100s to 300s (thousands, that is).

I concur.

Camp Creek is very nice. It's accessible to the city of Atlanta, and with the recent development of the Camp Creek Marketplace, decent shopping is right at your fingertips.

The Stonewall Manor subdivision is gorgeous!

I live in the Camp Creek area (Stonewall Manor subdivision) and we are very happy with the area. We moved into the area last July from NY and have been very happy so far. Everything is within easy access. We can be downtown in 20 minutes and in Midtown in 25-30 mins. Campcreek Marketplace is 10 mins away for most of our shopping needs. As one poster said, the area is close to Cascade and Sandtown and there are also lots of upscale subdivisions in the campcreek vicinity.
