28-county MSA defined by OMB: 5,268,860
10-county ARC area: 4,107,750
5 core counties: 3,365,297

All the estimates I've seen (ARC, Census, etc.) were way off. People have estimated Fulton at over a million for several years now, but they counted only 920,581. Weren't the July 1, 2009 estimates for the 28-county MSA something like 5.8M? Wow.

Last edited by tdatl; 03-17-2011 at 12:33 PM.. Reason: screwed up the math on the 5 core counties, correct now

actually explains something that's bothered me for years: there's always been this huge disconnect between data on the number of jobs in metro Atlanta vs. the population that I always questioned. They didn't jibe. The AJC wrote an article about it once.

Fulton, Dekalb, and Cobb seem very low. I thought Fulton was already 1 million, Dekalb around 750K and Cobb broke 700K???

420k in atlanta - off by 100k? i don't buy that the city only grew by 3000 people. this census just utterly failed in doing its job - i know i was never given the opportunity myself to respond, and i've been here in the city for a couple of years now

No that was the CSA estimate, Actually the ARC under estimated the Census estimated at 5.4 mil in 2009. After the drop with the Georgia estimates, and the notice that most metros were over estimated I kind saw 5.2 mil comming so I not surprise at that. knowing fulton hasn't reach a million yet my question is what is Atlanta proper.

But this is a glass half empty or full thing to me, no, Atlanta did not get 5.5 mil but still Atlanta went from 4,247,981 to 5,268,860 that’s still a million people gain. And I believe hall is going to go from CSA to MSA soon away. So I’m ok with the results.

The city got to challenge that, I don't believe that either.

Article after article stated Atlanta added over 100K, so how did it end up being only 3,000? That is way off. Did people just not participate?

Totally agree. The only way these results can be believed is if you are totally cracked out.

Well it was the Census who first said that Atlanta cracked 500K, so if their methods are more accurate now, it may very well be the case that the increase isn't as large as once thought. But I do think the city should mount a challenge. This is a pretty big discrepancy.

I also though the MSA population was going to be larger. The Texas metros (Houston, DFW) are putting more distance between themselves and Atlanta.

Doesn't count all the illegals and we have a huge population here. They don't fill out the forms. Those with huge families staying with them don't fill out the forms.

How much did the Hispanic and Asian populations grow here? There has been a huge growth of those 2 ethnic groups the last ten years here.
