We just moved to Buford, GA a couple of months ago and are thinking about checking out a beach tomorrow at Lake Lanier. It seems like there are a lot of different little parks and whatnot with swimming areas. Anywhere that you guys have been that you would recommend?
I have two young children... 2 and 3 years old... so a nice place for them to wade around in the water and some shady area for a picnic?

Thanks!

Here is a list of the various parks and facilities on the lake:

Lake Lanier Parks - Lake Lanier, Georgia

I have heard good things about Mary Alice Park in particular.

Hi and welcome to Buford!

I am a big lake lanier fan but to tell you the truth I go out on a boat to the little islands in the lake. Most of them have sand on the shore of the island so it's like being on a tropical island. Especially if you can find one with a wide open view of the lake.

There are a few parks with designated swimming areas that I know of but they look kind of chaotic during the busy season. If you don't have a boat but like the sound of being on one of the little islands, check out the Van Pugh Park picnic area. It used to be part of Van Pugh park then they destroyed it and removed a lot of the parking. It's a free parking lot basically now. If you can find a parking space (leave early) then walk to the north towards the end of the land.

Here's a map
Google Maps
(take a left on great water dr and then your very first right on that unnamed road)

If the lake level is low, you can walk (or wade) across the sand bar to those 3 islands on the top. That way you can really spread out and enjoy the peace and quiet and what the people with boats enjoy getting to explore those little islands. There are no facilities though and they won't let you in to use the restrooms at the park without paying either.

A lot of people bring dogs too by the way.
