It's not that big of a deal. Bring your passport or birth certificate, bank statement and SS card and you are good to go. Much ado about nothing because they require one more item now.

I've got my original birth certificate but to be honest I have no idea where my Social Security card is. I should see about getting a new one.

Actually, since you used to be able to renew online, they require three more items. And, they've made absolutely no effort whatsoever to educate the public about this change. As a result, a lot of people are going to have to make two visits to the DMV, rather than just one. What a waste of time over something that will do nothing to make anyone safer.

If you have a renewal coming up, you will get a card in the mail and the notice on the website telling you that you have to pay the DDS a visit to renew because of the Secure ID rule and the requirements.

You will be able to renew online after this visit so its just one visit for years to come...

I could have swore that Georgia was protesting the Secure ID law. I guess, the feds twisted their hand enough.

They will take a W2 in substitution for the SS card.

How could you have misplaced that big stone tablet that they chiseled your social security number into???

I'm definitely going to miss renewing online. I never really had any problems dealing with the DMV in person, but naturally this will drive more traffic back into the centers. The days of zipping in and out of the place are may very well be over.

I don't think that it will make us "safer" overall, but I can see where it could cut down on fraudulent activity. For example, with online renewals it was very easy for someone to move to another state and still claim a Georgia address since they probably didn't have to go back in person to renew their license or vehicle registration. A person in another state could easily use a relative's address and then have the item(s) mailed to them by the relative. With the new way, the person would either have to drive down from their true home to handle their business or just give it up altogether.

I've heard some radio commercials about the change, but that's about it. Although most people are probably used to doing things the old way, I would hope that they double-check the DDS website to see what they need to have before making a blank trip.

I hate when journalists presume their reading patrons are dumb. Most people know that you should look online and see what documents are required to renew their license/get a license/transfer a license. If someone has to make two visits to a DMV for any reason, it is a sign of incompetence and he should be embarrased to have his name in the paper.

I don't think the new requirements are a big deal but I probably would have assumed you did it the way we've always done it in the past.
