Big news. How did I miss this?

http://www.whitehouse.gov/sites/defa...013/b13-01.pdf

For example, the Atlanta metro area is now known as "Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Roswell" and no longer "Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Marietta"

(I think metro census-designated cities should be from different counties, IMHO.)

Where in the heck did Marietta go? It's an extremely important part of this area!

I've been looking this up. They are going completely based on city-size now. Employment and unincorporated areas don't matter. So... it is the top 3 cities (proper) in terms of population.

Marietta's population will always be limited by its independent school district. Otherwise, it could annex willy-nilly like Roswell and have a much larger population. God forbid when the "city" of Johns Creek enters the top 3, because with all of that territory, it will some day.

This is a shame because Marietta is really the only other Metro Atlanta city that holds its own. It has its own unique employment base, Dobbins ARB, colleges/universities and, most importantly, its own regional identity - a good portion of Cobb County has a Marietta mailing address. (I wonder what THAT number/population is? Any way to find out?) A very strong argument could be made for a Marietta "division" within the Atlanta metro area consisting of Cobb, Cherokee, Pickens, Paulding and Bartow counties.

It's meaningless anyway.

It's Atlanta period. None of the cities after Atlanta are core cities of their own merit.
