Hey ya'll,

I decided to stay home with my son instead of going back to teaching this year and I am hoping to start tutoring privately. I don't want to work through a company but would rather go on my own. I am secondary math certified and can tutor middle and secondary math in the Decatur area. I have a few ideas of how to get my name out there but wanted to see if anyone had some other suggestions. Thanks !

Why don't you network and see if you can meet with some teachers in your area. When students have trouble in say a math class and the teacher talks to the parents and the parents ask what they can do to help their kid, the teacher might suggest hiring a tutor. Then naturally, the parents ask... any tutors you recommend? And that's when the teacher mentions you.

It seems like everywhere you look there's tutoring places now. In shopping centers and whatnot. Could be tough to get a start.

I found a great tutor for my son on craigslist. A graduate of Emory, excellent references. BUT I went that route because I didn't feel I needed a teacher to help shore him up on some things in honors 6 & 7th grade math and preferred someone in college mostly based on price though.
I too looked into the Kumon and others but they weren't flexible enough. I've had this tutor come to my home as well as meet in the library. I think with good references you shouldn't have a hard time of it at all if the the market you're in will pay.
