Isn't there some strange wet stuff dropping from the sky at the moment?

We can take partial credit for that...we were shopping for a new convertible yesterday and we can now expect MUCH cooler and wetter weather for a while!

Sky? I can't see any sky - there's this weird grey stuff covering it. Although a "grey sky" might be normal in the British Isles, huh?

I'm tired of the weather forecasters saying, "yes it's raining, but it's just not enough..." Since there's nothing we can do about the weather, we might as well look at the positive side of the recent rain.

We've gotten an inch of rain over the past few days at my house so everything has had a nice soak and my rainbarrel is once again FULL. Woohoo!

I've been looking at rainbarrels, actually. Our yard is in a good position with the house situated somewhat above many of the shrubs and trees that might need watering, so I've been thinking about getting one and running a soaker hose from the rainbarrel to our cherry tree and some of the other plants that might get thirsty.

What kind of a setup do you have, and what do you use it for?

I also wonder how easy it'd be to set up a barrel, some sort of small pump, and 2-3 movable sprinker heads to do spot watering in needy areas?

Maybe this is good "new thread" material?

This is definitely a positive. What happened (not happened) in the past is that- in the past. Even if we were to get all of the shortfall between now and the end of the year- we would be dealing with flooding, erosion, mud slides, and over whelmed sewer systems- now, thats something to talk about! Let's hope not.
I'll be happy with enough water to keep my yard alive (not green- just alive) and hopefully we'll get enough to ease the stress on our lakes.

We just have one rain barrel at the moment (although I'm seriously considering getting another one -- I know of some local nurseries that are carrying them and I want to give them some business since I won't be buying any plants soon). We have been using it for several years to collect the condensate that runs out of the HVAC (ours is elevated and sits in the backyard so it's easy to access the condensate line) and I just redirected the gutter downspout into the barrel this summer. We only used the condensate in the past because we only needed to supplement water during the summer (and we could get 30 gal of water a day on really hot days). But with the drought continuing through the year, we're now collecting rain water as well. It's not nearly as clean as the condensate (because the roof collects pollen and twigs and miscellaneous dirt) but I don't think the plants really mind.

Our rain barrels were originally olive barrels used for importing olives. The folks at 'rainbarrels and more'(something like that) were nice enough to equip them with faucets and a screw-off top with screen(keep critters and debris out). Unfortunately, a neighbor tried to order a couple of weeks ago and they were out of stock...may have more by now. I know some locals around ATL have fashioned their own design and Home Depot even shows how to build one from a trash bin with PVC attachments.

Sure hope the area malcontents don't switch from harvesting copper on construction sites to stealing rain barrels from yards.
