Maglev test line for Atlanta? | Atlanta Forward

Looks like this is not something that has any serious backing at this point. But interesting. Not sure how reasonable connecting Atlantic station and Art Center with Maglev is. I see Maglev as more a long-distance transportation solution. Not ever sure how you would get the right-of-way to connect them. Streetcar makes much more sense in my opinion.

I don't know, the problem with a streetcar is the space needed in the roads which can make narrow roads even narrower. This short-range demonstration line allows the technology to be tested, and proven before larger-scale deployment. This makes far more sense than an Atlanta to Chattanooga maglev as has been floated a time or two. In terms of existing technology, this really won't require any more infrastructure than a monorail would, the only real difference being the propulsion method, which is far more efficient.

Shoot, I'd hook one up in a heartbeat. Think how handy it would be to zip from Atlantic Station over to the MARTA line in about 5 seconds.

Monorail service makes sense.

The distance from Atlantic Station to MARTA probably isn't any more than from the Mickey lot to the Magic Kingdom or from Mandalay Bay to Excalibur.

Disney and MGM figured out how to provide monorail service at zero charge to riders, so how expensive could it be?

A lot of people would ride a transit line from Arts Center to Atlantic Station. This would be 10x as useful as the current streetcar project. No lie.

I think MAGLEV is well beyond the testing phase. And is it a much more efficient form of propulsion? It's not being adopted as the preferred form of transit.

While you're not charged to get on the monorail, I'd say the cost of operation is more than covered in the $75/day you pay to be in the park, and the casinos make up for the cost of operations because they know they're about to take your money in other ways- so saying there's "zero charge to riders" isn't really correct.

To be fair, you've already paid up to $89/person per day for tickets, $57/ticket for Park Hopping, and $14 to park your car so having the audacity to charge to travel on the monorail may be a little too much.

I would think it would be more energy efficient simply due to less friction in the wheels though I will admit I'm not 100% familiar how maglev propulsion works. Is there some sort of thrust system on them or do the electromagnets pull the carriage forward?

In the purest of forms, it takes less force to move something that's levitating than does something resting fully on the ground because of ground friction.

Also, isn't the whole point of maglev to go ridiculously fast speeds? Why build such a short span to Atlantic station? I realize its just a test but the test wouldn't reflect the most important parameter; speed! I seriously doubt the city is going to let a maglev train zip by cars and pedestrians at 200mph, that is if it could even get up to that speed in such a short span.

We know maglev works anyway. Why do we need to test it at all?

I really don't think installing a test track for anything in one of our CBDs is a good idea.

On a side note, another group approached the city of Fayetteville recently to ask to allow for the installation of a Personal Transit System in the city. Very odd in my opinion due to the low density nature of Fayetteville. But the guy seemed serious and "all" he wanted was the air rights to build the track. Personally I am glad they didn't go with it as it screams of the Springfield Monorail, but interesting none the less.
