Metro Atlanta isn't half black either -- only about 30%.

The percentage of blacks in the city of Atlanta proper grew rapidly from the 1960s to the mid-80s, though it has been steadily dropping for the last 30 years.

Based on these charts it just looks like Hispanics are the reason for so much growth more so in Houston than Dallas. While Atlanta has a growing black population.

I think I inadvertently pushed a button. Sorry about that.

Nonsense. We have plenty of "ethnic" European influence here. They are just second or third generation, with the exception of our small yet burgeoning Eastern european community.

It's a common misnomer I've seen about the big four Southerner metros having diverse Asian and Latino populations, but a one dimensional White and Black population. By one dimensional I mean that those cities are mostly comprised of Southern whites and blacks. While all four cities certain have a large population of both, all four have large populations of transplants from the Midwest and Northeast who are the children of those early 20th century European immigrants. All four also have diverse black populations as well. I know for Atlanta that close a half million black residents are either native African (third largest native african population after New York and DC) or from the Caribbean as well as central and south America.

I just realized in my last post it only detailed African, Caribbean, and European ethicities with a few Latin and Asian ethnicities thrown in. Not sure why the Census Bureau did that, but here's everyone else:

Very true, waronmxmas. I think folks sometimes forget how much of our local history and how profoundly many of our major local institutions were founded or influenced by "ethnic" Europeans.

Why Gentrification? | Newgeography.com

Quote:
Untold billions pumped into various Great Society type programs accomplished little that was sustainable. Indeed, many programs like urban renewal, yesterday’s urban planning conventional wisdom, turned out to be disasters for cities. Community organizing may have launched the career of President Obama, but it’s not clear how it has helped Chicago’s marginalized communities. Given the paucity of models other than gentrification, it’s easy to see the attraction.
Quote:
But the gentrification model in most places is simply too narrow to move the needle or produce any benefits down the economic ladder. It is imperative that urban thinkers and leaders try harder to find models that provide more inclusive and broadly-based and socially sustainable benefits.

This is not an "either-or" situation.
Great point.

As one growing up in the southeast, the only ethnic discussion for years was the black/white discussion. Having other groups in the mix is still a new phenomenon to many of us. As for Texas, the hispanic population has been a part of the mix for much longer than GA or other southeastern states. Some might think that Dallas and Houston are whiter when in actuality it has many hispanics that have been in the area for generations and may be perceived as being white. Where a hispanic person in GA is most likely an immigrant with little or no skill of the English language, you have a great hispanic population in Texas that is very 'Texan."
