Wrong. It has built desirable, cheap SUBURBS. The city itself hardly gets new residents...it still hasn't officially broke 500k. I don't even think estimates have put Atlanta above 450k....which is sad...so sad...pop. density in the city doesn't break 5k like HOW DOES A BONAFIDE CITY NOT BREAK 5K PSM??? You'd think with it's awesome skyline, it would actually be more of a real city, but it's not.

It doesn't have a good transit system, it's highway system isn't that great, it's urban living isn't that great, and the city is consistently considered one of the most dangerous, crime ridden cities in the country. Midtown Atlanta is in this wave of high crime with the further density that is gets. It does not have much historical prevalence in the history of this country...at least not compared to the cities of Boston, NYC, and Philly. It no longer has a can-do attitude. As someone mentioned, it takes decades to get things done now. DC, NYC and other cities have begun taking initiatives to further improve their infrastructure, specially their subway systems. Here, any mention of taxes will almost instantly give you a NO answer.

Atlantans, especially the suburbanites don't care about the central city. It doesn't directly affect the so why should they care? They think it's a haven of crime and minorities, specifically blacks. A portion of them simply go for a Braves games or work and simply go home. On a Saturday, 4/5 people walking the streets of Downtown are tourists. I bet you in NYC, half or more of those walking the streets of Midtown are residents of the city. They take pride in Manhattan. The suburbanites almost want to separate themselves from the city. Embarrassing.

Insane because I see all these great cities around the world and then you look at Atlanta and then you truly see the potential that will never be met. You realize Atlanta as far as culture relevance and how the city is built doesn't even break top 100 in the world. Metros of 2 million in Europe destroy Atlanta. It's sad. Just sad.

The city made poor choices early in it's life and now it's suffering. It's trying to play catch up, but it's hard in this day and age when money is tight and developers have to make cut choices. This means development of the city is slow.
Who in the sunbelt has better transit than we do?

Comparing it to other cities doesn't mean it works any better. So it has better transit than most other Sunbelt cities, however it's not enough in Atlanta.

Transit sucks in Phoenix, however I can quickly get from Tempe all the way out to City of Surprise without hopping on a single expressway/highway once. And that 15 mile ride will only take me about 20-30 minutes (by street). The need for mass transit in Phoenix isn't nearly as great.

The need is much greater in Atlanta than most other Sunbelt cities, so that becomes a pointless question.

Eh, just about every route from Tempe to Suprise is over 30 minutes and has at least some highway. I'm not even sure of that includes traffic. Not to mention the Pheonix metro is about a 1 million people smaller.

I can pick random examples of getting around Atlanta quick too. You aren't making any point.

Are trying to tell me that Houston and Dallas don't need trains?

I have to disagree. I'm out here in Cali and no one really knows or cares about Atlanta. Maybe someone will vaguely remember the 96 olypmpics. But no one cares that delta, coke, home depot, georgia pacific, att , etc being based out in Atlanta. Even the blacks folks could care less about the MLK museum that is in ATL. NO ONE in the world cares about Atlanta.

The only thing that I appreciated about Atlanta was the low COL and the job ops. But its cheap for a reason...

Also I hear ATL hard heads being proud of the capacity of ATL airport... Again who cares! I used to travel everyweek for work and it was a depressing place to sit to depart from or arrive to. I've traveled to airports all around the world and the ATL has the dumpiest airport ever (except GIG LOL, but one of its newish terminal is pretty decent)! Even the new international wing has this fake and empty feel to it.

Well that seals it. The city doesn't exist and no one is moving here.

Despite that people continue to flock here by the millions.

What does Houston and Dallas have to do with Atlanta's need for transit?
SO...
Your points are so pointless.

You sound like my child complaining she has to be in bed by 9pm, because "her friend's dad lets her stay up til 10pm"
"So... I'm not her dad, but I am yours and in THIS house, you need to be in bed by 9..."

That's what your point equates to.

No offense, but where do you live? Most those walking the streets in Midtown atlanta are not tourists either, just like your reference of Midtown Atlanta. Maybe Atlanta isn't the city you want but it is growing. I have 2 cranes within 2 blocks of my home and many more within a mile and the streets are busy.

Lots of suburban residents in other cities don't exactly spend all their time in the city either.

I feel ya... Honestly, somewhere deep inside, I feel this little sting when I travel around to all these other airports and see how nice and efficient they are... Then I think back to that horrible, whoever designed should have their toe-nails snatched out in public, tan and orange warehouse looking building we call Hartsfield and just feel low, and don't understand how come so many things in Atlanta are just so often... ......... eh....... I don't have a word for it. But just think about the exterior of the Georgia Dome, the exterior of Hartsfield, the interior and lack of windows of Hartsfield, the massive, flat, open parking lots everywhere, the grass & weeds growing up through the pavement of empty parking lots just blocks from the 0 mile point at the center of the city, the tragically under developed railroad gulch area and all its history that was destroyed just to make room for more parking, the (instead of building the freeway UP, or to go around) downtown connector that destroyed several historic neighborhoods just to cut straight through the city and break up the continuity of the city's core, the peach-pass lane actually causing MORE traffic, tragic mistake of creating a retardedly large parking lot over the site of the late Fulton County Stadium (when it could have been something much greater like a mixed use community (WITH underground parking) or a park or something. ANYTHING but just a flat parking lot)... ETC... The list can go on... And these are the things that acutally get done, while all the really good ideas get holes poked in them by Atlanta nay-sayers and pessimists until the ideas fold and never happen.

Wanna know what a World Class airport is like, fly to Minneapolis. Fly to Denver. Fly to Singapore...
