Voters and parents need to be aware of the possible cuts to Paulding County schools for next year. We are not talking about mere "belt tightening". That has already been going on for the last 2 years. We are talking about even deeper cuts that will impact education. These cuts to education are getting WORSE every year, and are happening all over the state of GA.

Possible cuts for next school year in Paulding County:

Teachers pay cuts of 10% at the local level, plus whatever the GA state lawmakers are cooking up. Possible elimination of elementary art, music, and PE. Implement a 4 day school week. Eliminate or reduce kindergarten parapros. Eliminate middle school foreign language and athletics.

Cut 34 jobs at the central office.

Reduce the school year by 4 days (from 180 to 176).

This last one makes me angry. Are we really to the point in GA that we just have to cancel school because "We ain't got the money!" Remember that the state lawmakers were also proposing to close school state-wide for 5 days! (part of the plan to give all teachers 10 furlough days) Is that plan still in the running? There has been no information from the gold dome. How many days will GA kids be sitting home next year when kids in other states are in school and learning? How can we seriously be #3 in the running for Race to the Top?

Lawmakers seem more worried about everything but education during the latest sessions. If education were a priority, better plans could be made. Instead, the "solution" is to cut, cut, cut.

I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and stipulate for a minute that you're correct in your assertion. What in your mind is a "better plan" and why are school districts all over the country not getting on board with your better plan, since most are looking to "cut, cut, cut" to meet the simple reality of falling property tax revenue?

As much as I hate it, it's necessary. At the state level, lawmakers have really avoided cutting education (they deeply cut healthcare funding instead). There's really nothing left to cut from the state budget anymore except education. At the local level, what else can they do? Education makes up the bulk of any county budget, and counties are getting slammed with decreased revenue.

Four day weeks are going to be hard on high schoolers, we wont be able to have after school jobs and after school activities (sports, plays, ect) will run until 8 or 9 oclock! Not to mention all the homework we will have added on to getting home late.
