The advantage that Fulton Industrial has is that it's situated in an area that is well served by infrastructure - I-285, I-20, Charlie Brown Field, Hartsfield-Jackson Int'l - which makes it quite accessible. I strongly believe that casinos could be the "shot in the arm" that the corridor needs.
It would also be nothing for MARTA to extend the West Line out there.

Fulton Industrial doesn't have much of a surrounding community, at least in terms of residents, so the impact would mainly be on the industry down there. If they were able to make that part of the river a nice waterfront to go along with all the casino business, it would certainly make for something a little more permanent. Gotta get the casinos past the "gambling attracts crime" crowd, and then navigate the stampede of moral high horses first, and then you might have something.

What a great idea.

The only argument against casinos is they attract crime and scummy people. It's not always true, but the argument could be so what? Do you think the people over there are actually going to get worse? Doubtful!

I like the casino idea, especially with Six Flags already there to drop the minors off at while Mommy & Daddy blow their life savings. Seriously, I think it would be great to have an (less sketchy) adult entertainment district in the area.

We absolutely would have to get past the whole argument about gambling attracting crime. There are many examples of casinos in urban areas that operate well with minimal crime. However the very reason why Fulton Industrial would be a great place for this is that the area would have minimal impact on existing neighborhoods and thus will potentially minimize the noise made by NIMBY's and folks on "moral high horses" (great term, HH82). Additionally given the current state of affairs in the area in regards to crime and blight, casinos would be a welcomed improvement.

Good idea for North Dekalb (as long as there's a movie theater on the ground floor). That's North Dekalb Mall's claim to fame right now...

I disagree about South Dekalb Mall. Although it is a low-budget mall, people do shop there and stores make money and ultimately stay in business. It's not like acres of useless space. Plus, if the property values are low and the area is not super-desirable as is, I don't think a mixed-use development on top of South Dekalb Mall would change that. There are plenty of mixed-used developments in nicer areas that still are having a hard time maintaining their value.

If a mixed use development was built on Candler Rd. near South Dekalb Mall, I think the market would eventually force it to become a cheap apartment complex. Especially when you can buy a four-bedroom house down the street for $30k to $40k.

i want some kind of urban waterfront, whether it's the daylighting of proctor creek, or (in a million years) some sort of lake/lake system in place of the connector downtown. yes, i do realize how unrealistic i appear, but clearly i'm not the first one to think of it, nor has something similar never been attempted previously.
I would like to see that too, but Atlanta's city center is built on a very high point, the very reason the railroads came in the first place. No real streams or low places near downtown for a water feature to fit naturally. Would have to be fountains or such, not the same thing, but still.....

-As someone said on this thread prior, a centralize entertainment district...why don't we have something like Shibuya in Tokyo, Times Square in NYC...with neon, flashing lights...can be create somewhere in Midtown....probably Spring Street?

Shibuya, Tokyo

SHIBUYA/SHIBUYA STATION -Tokyo- -English- - YouTube

-A movie threatre in Midtown...Atlantic station gets so packed and there really isn't a movie theatre close to that point. An movie in Midtown would increase pedestrian traffic and life....before or after a movie, people can SHOP on the Midtown Mile.

-Maybe a park where the Midtown Marta station parking is...it's insane a packing lot that big is right in the middle of Midtown...I mean smack dab right in the middle...that can be turned into a nice park if it won't be developed on...if not, turn that into the movie threatre idea I was talking about above.

-I mean, just more development...particularly some more affordable housing in Midtown.

More nightlife also needs to be moved to the big suburban areas, since that's where most of the patrons live. We don't need people drinking and then getting on the streets for long treks back home.

In short we need more live/work/play districts where people can do everything close to where they live. It's ridiculous for people living in outer DeKalb, Gwinnett, Cobb or Henry to drive all the way into the city of Atlanta simply to drink and carouse.
But that's how REAL cities work. NYC, the vast majority of nightlife is on Manhattan Island. In SF, all the nightlife is in the CITY. In Tokyo, all of the nightlife is in Shibuya an central areas of Tokyo!

Who gives a crap about families living in Midtown. What the hell is this? Midtown is the CENTER OF THE CITY. If they want to raise families, move their asses to the suburbs....young people are naturally attracted to the cities and you MUST have nightlife in the central areas for tourists and locals alike. We're not trying to become San Jose. We are trying to become a respectable city with a respectable and exciting core like REAL cities in the world are: Hong Kong, Tokyo, London, Paris, NYC.

I don't know why, but your post pissed me off so hard. I can't believe we're asking for nightlife to be moved from MIDTOWN to the freaking suburbs. Do you want our core to be desolate and have ZERO energy but people working from 9-5? Do you want WANT to become Houston and Dallas where no one is walking on the streets?

Pathetic.
